Lavrov: Russia to supports will of Syrian people
Human rights activists in Syria say 95 people have been killed by
government forces over the last two days and culprit is government
troops said to be staging attacks in the central city of Homs and Daraa
in the south. Periodic sporadic explosions too are heard in the capital
city Damascus.
UN monitors inspected the site of a massacre where more than 80 people, including women and children, were killed on Wednesday near the central city of Hama.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says his country will not oppose the departure of President Bashar al-Assad if it is the will of the Syrian people.Lavrov spoke to reporters in Moscow on Saturday. He said if the Syrians themselves agree on Assad's departure, Russia will be happy to support such a solution.
He cited the power transition in Yemen, where former President Ali Abdullah Saleh was eventually pushed out. He said that was a result of an internal process without any conditions being set by external parties.
Russia has continued to maintain friendly ties with Syria. Lavrov said his country opposes any UN Security Council resolution against Syria, since it would adversely affect neighboring countries in the Middle East.
Russian foreign minister again called for an international conference that would bring together the 5 permanent UN Security Council members and other related countries such as Iran and Turkey.
