The Looming Threat of Water Scarcity
As World Water Day approaches, new Worldwatch Institute study examines global water use and steps to address water scarcity   Washington, D.C.—Some 1.2 billion people—almost a fifth of the world—live in areas of physical water scarcity, while another 1.6 billion face what can be called economic water shortage. The situation is only expected to worsen as population growth, climate change, investment and management shortfalls, and inefficient use of existing resources restrict the amount of water available to people, according to Worldwatch Institute’s Vital ...
The Red-Dead water conveyer can avoid a dead end
The Red-Dead canal could take a small step forward in light of projected environmental impacts and other constraints, says Batir Wardam. After a delay of more than six months, the World Bank has finally released the final drafts of the feasibility and environmental assessment studies for the controversial Red Sea-Dead Sea Water Conveyance project, designed to channel some 1.2 billion cubic metres of water 180 kilometres from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea. [1] The plan is to pump sea water from the Red Sea, pass it through a series of desalination plants, use the desalinated water for drinking, ...
EnviroChemie GmbH Technology for Water
Waste water treatment in the dairy processing industry - recovering energy using Anaerobic Technology.-The composition of wastewater from dairy processing plants makes it highly suitable for biological wastewater treatment processing. As well anaerobic biological treatment of the wastewater there is also the option of applying anaerobic biological processes. By applying anaerobic technology a large part of the organic load in the wastewater can be removed and converted into energy-rich biogas. In addition, the anaerobic technology can be used in dairies to produce biogas from waste whey. The biogas which is generated can be used to produce electrical and/or thermal energy. Read more

Save Dissent to Save Democracy   THE rising instances of physical violence and threats against political opponents and the inability to accept dissent must raise huge concerns amongst all of us who see democracy as perhaps the really stellar achievement since Independence. AAP’s attack on BJP headquarters and acts of arson committed under the very noses of their elite leadership; the attacks on Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia in Gujarat in the last two days; the recent manhandling of the caretaker of journalist Siddharth Varadarajan’s house by some garden variety thugs; and the violence and threats meted out regularly to their political opponents by political parties is surely deplorable and condemnable. This is a fatally flawed trend which will destroy the very foundations of our democratic institutions if not pushed back with all the strength and condemnation that the civil society can mobilise. Replaying the past To begin with, it must be clarified that we should ...
