India’s Mars mission’s escape velocity make it enter next orbit
1 12 2013

India’s
maiden mission to Mars left Earth’s orbit early on Sunday and
successfully entered the second phase of its 10-month-long voyage to the
Red Planet after performing a crucial manoeuvre described as “mother of
all slingshots”.
|
|
Clearing a critical hurdle to achieve a major milestone in the
country’s space history, ISRO’s Mars Orbiter Spacecraft or ‘Mangalyaan’
was placed in the designated Mars Transfer Trajectory in a 22-minute
manoeuvre almost an hour past midnight without any hitch to tear itself
away from Earth’s gravitational pull.
It marked the first step of the Mars mission’s 680 million-km-long voyage to its destination to put on course the India’s first ever inter-planetary space odyssey. “Following the completion of this manoeuvre, the Earth orbiting phase of the spacecraft ended. The spacecraft is now on a course to encounter Mars after a journey of about 10 months around the Sun,” the Bangalore-headquartered Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) said in a statement. During this manoeuvre, which began at 00:49 hours, the spacecraft’s 440 Newton liquid engine was fired for about 22 minutes providing a velocity increment of 648 metres/second to the spacecraft. ISRO performed the trans-Mars injection, a “crucial event” intended for hurling its Mars Orbiter spacecraft into the planned orbit around the Sun. It has planned four mid-course corrections in case of any deviation along its path to the Martian orbit before its expected arrival in the orbit of the Red planet in September 2014. ISRO had performed five orbit-raising manoeuvres on its Mars Orbiter, raising the apogee (farthest point from Earth) of the spacecraft to over 1.92 lakh km, before it performed the “mother of all slingshots.” The spacecraft is being continuously monitored from the Spacecraft Control Centre at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bangalore with support from Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) antennae at Byalalu. The success of the spacecraft, scheduled to orbit Mars by September, could carry India into a small club of nations including the US, Europe, and Russia, whose probes have orbited or landed on Mars. More than half of all missions to the planet have ended in failure, including China’s in 2011 and Japan’s in 2003. ISRO’s PSLV C 25 successfully injected the 1,350-kg ‘Mangalyaan’ Orbiter (Mars craft) into the orbit around the earth some 44 minutes after a text book launch at 2.38 PM from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota on November 5, marking the successful completion of the first stage of the Rs 450-crore mission. |

Tejpal remanded in 6-day police custody
1 12 2013
|
|
|
|
Tarun
Tejpal, accused of sexually assaulting a woman colleague, was on Sunday
sent to police remand for six days following which Crime Branch
officials began grilling him.
|
|
Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Shama Joshi ordered six days’
police custody of Tejpal after the prosecution sought his remand for 14
days.
Public prosecutor Frances Tavera sought police custody of Tejpal saying his custodial interrogation was needed because of the nature of the crime involved. Tejpal’s lawyers opposed the demand for police custody saying he was cooperating with the Crime Branch. A woman journalist employed with Tehelka had accused its editor Tejpal of sexually assaulting her twice on November 7 and 8 in a lift in a five star hotel in Goa. He has been booked under Sections 354A (outraging the modesty of a woman) and 376 (2)(K) (custodial rape) of IPC. Tejpal, who was arrested at 9 PM yesterday after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by a District and Sessions judge, was brought to the magistrate’s court by Goa police crime branch before noon on Sunday. In her 25-page order, District and Sessions Judge Anuja Prabhudesai has yesterday observed that, “The statement of the victim and the documents in the form of emails etc., details of which need not be reproduced here, prima facie indicate that the applicant, who was her mentor and father figure, had not only outraged her modesty but had misused his position, betrayed her trust and violated her body.” The judge had said the applicant is not only an influential person but the record prima facie indicates that the applicant tried to influence the family of the victim and the possibility of the applicant interfering with the evidence cannot be ruled out. Immediately after the magistrate’s order on Sunday, Tejpal was taken to the Crime Branch headquarters at Dona Paula for interrogation. Police sources said that serious interrogation of Tejpal began only on Sunday. Earlier, Tejpal spent the night in a police lock-up here with three persons, including two murder accused. He was referred for mandatory medical check-up at Goa Medical College near here at 12:30 midnight. The 50-year-old-journalist refused to talk to the media after emerging from the medical college. He was accompanied by his lawyer and his family joined him outside the police headquarters, before he was taken to the lock-up at around 2 AM. Police sources added that he remained calm after his arrest, during medical check-up and also in the lock-up. He was supplied with a new pair of clothes by his family, as allowed by the ourt. The Crime Branch sleuths posted their guards outside the lock-up. The dingy lock-up is located inside the Police Headquarters in Panaji, overlooking the office of the Director General of Police (DGP). Tejpal’s arrest came ten days after it became public that he had allegedly sexually assaulted the woman. |

Diesel price hiked by 50 paise; petrol rates unchanged
1 12 2013
|
|
|
|
Diesel prices have been hiked by 50 paise per litre on Saturday but there will be no revision in rates of petrol this fortnight.
|
|
The
price increase, the 11th since January, excludes local sales tax or VAT
and will be effective from Saturday midnight, oil companies announced.
The price of diesel in Delhi will be hiked by 57 paise, including
tax, to Rs 53.67 per litre, while it will cost Rs 60.70 a litre in
Mumbai as against 60.08 currently.
There will be no change in petrol prices as oil companies decided not to pass on the 25-30 paise increase necessitated by depreciation of the rupee against the US dollar. State-owned oil firms, which revise petrol prices on the 1st and 16th of every month based on trends in oil prices and currency exchange rate in the preceding fortnight, had left the rates unchanged even on 16th November. Petrol prices were last revised on 1st November, when it was cut by Rs 1.15 a litre. It costs Rs 71.02 a litre in Delhi currently. The government allowed oil companies in January to raise diesel prices in small doses every month to wipe out mounting losses. |

Rajasthan Assembly poll turnout nearly 75 per cent
1 12 2013
|
|
|
|
Nearly
75 per cent voters have exercised their franchise in Rajasthan Assembly
polls on Sunday to decide the fate of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and
his bete noire BJP’s Vasundhra Raje among others.
|
|
The turnout was 74.38 per cent, the highest-ever in the desert state, the Election Commission said.
The fate of 2,087 candidates, including Gehlot and Raje, was sealed
in the Electronic Voting Machines after the exercise which saw police
firing in the air at a few places to restore calm.
A pick up was also set ablaze and reports of attempt to capture a booth and malfunctioning of EVMs were reported from some places, officials said. The voting was held for 199 out of 200 assembly seats up for grabs. Polling was adjourned in Churu constituency to 13th December following the death of BSP candidate Jagdish Meghwal. Police fired in the air to disperse a group of persons trying to disturb polling at Saleempur in Dausa district, at Rein in Alwar and near Khumber-Deeg in Bharatpur, ADGP (Law and Order) Navdeep Singh said. No one was injured and the polling went on smoothly at these places, he said. “No untoward incident was reported within 200 metres of polling booths in the entire state,” the ADGP said. A pick van was set ablaze by some persons at Fatehpur in Sikar district, the ADGP said. Some anti-socials tried to capture a booth in Rupwas area in Bharatpur district leading to suspension of the polling briefly. “After a brief interruption, the polling resumed,” Bharatpur Collector Neeraj K Pawan said. Gehlot, his wife, son and daughter-in-law cast votes at Vardhman Jain upper primary school in Mahamandir area in Jodhpur. Gehlot is trying his luck from his home turf Sardarpura in Jodhpur district and chief ministerial aspirant Raje from Jhalarapatan constituency in Jhalawar district. In 2003 assembly elections, the turnout was 68.18 per cent and in 2008, it was 66.49 per cent, Election Commission officials said. No votes were cast in a polling booth in Dug assembly seat in Jhalawar district with the electorate boycotting the democratic exercise. The Congress and the BJP fielded 200 candidates each and the BSP 195. As many as 758 Independents also threw their hats into the ring Some 50 EVMs were found faulty and were replaced, the officials said. According to tentative figures, Jaisalmer recorded 77.50 per cent voting, Hanumangarh 74.14, Jhalawar 73.02, Ganganagar 72.60, Chittorgarh 70.31 and Banswara 69.58, they said. Bhullar bags fifth Asian Tour title with win in Indonesia
Three Indians in top-6
Jakarta, Indonesia, December 1, 2013: Gaganjeet
Bhullar bagged his fifth Asian Tour title with victory at the Indonesia
Open on Sunday. Bhullar shot scores of 64, 67, 69 and 69 to total
16-under-268 for the week. He Malaysian Nicholas Fung and Thailand’s
Chapchai Nirat finished three strokes behind Bhullar in joint second.
Jyoti
Randhawa claimed fifth place at 11-under-273 while Anirban Lahiri
secured tied sixth at 10-under-274 to make it three Indians in the
top-6. PGTI member Md Siddikur Rahman of Bangladesh finished with a
four-day total of 12-under-272 to bag fourth place.
Bhullar,
who had a forgettable outing at the World Cup of Golf last week, fired a
bogey-free 68 in the final round to come home the winner. He thus ended
up being the wire-to-wire leader from round one till the very end.
Gaganjeet sank all his three birdies on Sunday on the back-nine – 11th, 13th and 14th.
He was solid through the week having conceded only three bogeys and a
double-bogey over the last four days. Interestingly, the 25-year-old had
also won his first Asian Tour title in Indonesia back in 2009.
Bhullar
has had a brilliant season so far. He had posted a runner-up finish at
the Avantha Masters, a European Tour & Asian Tour co-sanctioned
event, earlier this year. This win is expected to push him up on the
Asian Tour Order of Merit, where he is currently ranked sixth.
Former Asia no. 1 Jyoti Randhawa fired a 69 to record his second top-5 on the Asian Tour in the last one month.
Anirban
Lahiri, a three-time winner on the Asian Tour, posted a 68 in the final
round in Indonesia to grab a share of sixth place.

Thidapa bags top honours at Hero Women’s Indian
1 12 2013
Consistent Thidapa bags top honours at Hero Women’s Indian Open 2013
New Delhi, November 30:
Thailand pro Thidapa Suwannapura maintained outright lead to win her
maiden Ladies European Tour (LET) title at the seventh Hero Women’s
Indian Open golf tournament at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC) on Saturday.
The
21-year-old Thidapa didn’t lose her concentration and led throughout
the day to shoot a bogey-free four-under 68 in the final round for an
aggregate of eight-under 208. She scored a three-stroke victory over
first-day joint leader Valentine Derrey of France, who ran short of her
maiden LET victory after a two-under 70 on Saturday.
“It’s
an amazing thing to win at the Hero Women’s Indian Open. I didn’t think
that I am going to win this tournament since this course is very tough.
Even in the beginning of the round, I thought I didn’t have a strong
chance. But I concentrated more on my game than other factors and won
eventually,” said Thidapa.
Thidapa
also ensured that the trophy remained in Thailand as last year it was
her compatriot Pornanong Phatlum, who won her third Hero Women’s Indian
Open title.
Another Thai Saraporn Chamchoi made a late charge but a bogey on 16th crushed her title hopes as she finished third with Hannah Burke of England, who shot a fine 68.
DGC
amateur Gauri Monga entertained the local crowd with her consistent
round of two-under 70 to finish tied fifth in the company of US veteran
Beth Allen, who shot the day’s best round of six-under 66, and England
sensation Charley Hull (70). They ended their campaign five strokes
behind the winner Thidapa.
Gauri’s
finish is India’s second-best performance at the Hero Women’s Indian
Open after Meghna Bal and Irina Brar finished tied fourth in the first
edition of the tournament in 2007.
Earlier
in the day, Thidapa, one of the three Thai golfers to play on the
Ladies Professional Golfers Association (LPGA), received challenge from
Derrey and Saraporn, but she didn’t let the lead slip away from her
hands.
Thidapa
was off to a flying start when she picked a birdie on the very first
hole. The steady golfer continued her excellent form, firing another
birdie on nine. Playing in her group, Valentine emerged as a strong
threat to Thidapa. The Frenchwoman started the day one stroke behind
Thidapa but caught up with the Thai girl with birdies on fourth and
sixth. Valentine slipped back after dropping a shot on seventh. She,
however, picked up a birdie on eighth, but managed only pars on the
remaining holes finishing for the runners-up position.
Even
as Valentine was making a charge, it was Saraporn, who also emerge as
potential threat for her compatriot. Coming from behind, Saraporn, who
started the day with a bogey on the first, knocked in two birdies in
succession on eighth and ninth. She was not a factor till then, but the
21-year old shot into contention with three birdies in a row (13th, 14th and 15th) to join Thidapa in the lead. But just when it mattered the most, Saraporn fumbled and dropped her shot on the 16th to slip out of contention.
Thidapa, on the other hand held her nerve in crucial moments and shot birdies on 13th and 14th without dropping any shots thereafter ensuring her victory.
“I
was so focused on my game that I didn’t know that I had missed only one
fairway today and also made no bogey. I knew it only when Vatentine and
my caddie told me. I didn’t not make a lot of mistakes and that helped
me win here,” said Thidapa.
Thidapa
has retained her LPGA card, but she wants to play on LET as well. “I
will prefer LPGA to LET, but will play on the European tour whenever I
have a week off,” she said.

Exciting finish brings the curtains down on the JK Tyre Racing Championship
1 12 2013- Vishnu Prasad clinches championship in JK Racing India Series (FB02) in his debut year
- Rahil Noorani highest points finisher in JK Tyre-VW Polo Cup
- Sarosh Hataria seals championship title in the Formula LGB 4 category
Greater Noida, December 1: The
final round of the JK Tyre Racing Championship came to a thrilling
finish in front of over 10,000 vocal spectators and motor sports fans at
the Buddh International Circuit. After setting the tone on Saturday,
the best drivers in India came up some spectacular high speed action as
the country’s premier motor racing championship drew to a close with the
crowning of champions.
Vishnu
Prasad of Meco Racing became the first ever champion in the JK Racing
India Series that was introduced this year by JK Tyre in technical
partnership with Italian racing outfit, Eurointernational. In the
Formula LGB 4, redoubtable Sarosh Hataria of Dark Don Racing took the
champion’s title, while Rahil Noorani of Mumbai took the top honours in
the JK Tyre Volkswagen Polo R Cup.
In
the final two races of the JK FB02, Kolhapur-based, Chittesh Mandody,
who clinched his maiden victory in this class on Saturday, came up with a
stunning repeat performance by taking two more victories making a
hat-trick of wins over the weekend. Arjun Maini, who was in the running
for the championship along with Vishnu Prasad, finished third in the
first race of FB02 class, which he followed by a third place finish in
second race of the day. Championship leader, Prasad, finished second and
third respectively in the two races, which was enough to ensure him the
championship with 179 points. For his super effort in his debut year in
the class, Prasad has earned himself a free test in European Formula 3
in Italy with Eurointernational.
In the JK
Tyre Volkswagen Polo R Cup, Gaurav Mehta won the first race of the day,
with Jeffrey Kruger and Rahil Noorani in second and third places
respectively. In the second race, Kruger was back at the top ahead of
Noorani and Karthik Tharani. But being an invitation driver, Kruger’s
points were not taken into account towards the championship. As a
result, Noorani was crowned as the champion in the VW Polo R Cup with a
total of 392 points. Prashant Tharani finished the year with 368 points
in second place, while Angad Matharoo ended the season in third place
with 312 points.
In the
only race of the Formula LGB 4 of the day, Kartik Krishna took a fine
victory ahead of Vishnu Prasad and Rohit Khanna. Despite finishing
outside the top three, it was Hataria’s day, as he was formally crowned
as the champion with 230 points, followed by Prasad at 162 points and
Krishna in third place on the points table with a tally of 149 points.
But
it was the Ultima Queens, who brought the house down when they lined up
on the grid for the final race of the day. Sheila Verschuur from The
Netherlands once again repeated yesterday’s performance to clinch a fine
victory, with Edina Bus and Lieette Braams-Van finishing in second and
third places respectively.

CONGRESS GOVTS DECELERATES THE PACE OF DEVELOPMENT IN DELHI-SUKHBIR
1 12 2013
• NDA committed to realise Vajpayee’s dreams of making the national capital as world’ most well planned city
• Congress making mockery of Delhi people by Quoting Delhi as a developed city
New Delhi, December 1
President
Shiromani Akali Dal and Deputy Chief Minister Punjab Mr. Sukhbir Singh
Badal today lashed at Congress for decelerating the pace of development
initiated by NDA and BJP governments to make the capital of world’s
largest democracy as most well planned city of the world. He said that
Congress led centre and Delhi governments manipulated the development
plans to fill the coffers of its coterie.
Addressing an election rally in the favour of BJP candidate Mr. Rajiv
Babbar at Tilak Nagar , Mr. Badal said that the last BJP government had
scaled a complete layout plan for the overall development of Delhi and
NDA government did its best to complete the work on these plans in a
time bound manner. He said that even Delhi Metro Rail Corporation was
also set up during the BJP government of Delhi in May 1995 and total
ground work and planning was done by BJP government in the subsequent
two-three years. Mr. Badal said that former Prime Minister Attal Bihari
Vajpayee had also expressed his desire to develop this city as a model
of excellence while inaugurating the Delhi metro in December 2002. He
said that these were not just the dreams as Delhi has such a high
potential that it could be easily developed as one of the top 10 well
planned cities of the world and NDA was committed to realise these
dreams.
Expressing
surprise over tall claims of Congress party, Mr. Badal questioned that
how a party could pat its back for development after 15 years of rule in
Delhi, when the state was still facing the shortage of basic amenities
like water supply and sanitation. He said that speed of the city was
still hanged in the heavy traffic jams and everyone used to think twenty
times before travelling from one place to other. He said that after NDA
rule the speed of development in Delhi dangled as Congress led UPA in
collusion with Delhi government handed over these projects to its
friendly companies and shared the booty. He said that Congress was
making a mockery of Delhi people by quoting Delhi as a developed state
as the common man of the city has been contained in the trap of
distresses only due to corrupt and mismanaged policies of Congress’
Delhi government. He said that congress has only two things in its
basket and those were corruption and inflation.
Mr. Badal appealed the voters of Delhi for the record victory of
SAD-BJP candidates to ensure the overall development of the state.
Later, Akali President known for his micro poll management held a number
‘Nukar Meetings’ with prominent personality in Hari Nagar and Rajaouri
Garden areas.

Ahmedabad: Gujarat has a higher HIV/AIDS adult prevalence rate than
the country average and ranks fifth in the country in number of cases.
Gujarat has an adult prevalence rate of 0.33% against the all-India
0.27%.
According to statistics made available by Gujarat State AIDs
Control Society (GSACS), there are 20.9 lakh people living with
HIV/AIDS of which 1.27 lakh are in Gujarat.
GSACS statistics reveal that the adult prevalence rate was 0.27%
in the country, while it was 0.33% in Gujarat.
Gujarat has the fifth largest number of HIV/ AIDS cases. States
with more cases are Andhra Pradesh, Maharastra, Karnataka and Tamil
Nadu.
According to GSACS, a total of 5.2 lakh people were tested in the
general category between April 1 and October 13 this year. Of these
5.2 lakh, 6,855 people tested positive which is 1.32% of those tested.
Interestingly, Ahmedabad tops the number of people testing
positive in all categories — general, pregnant women and sex workers.
In the same period in 2013, a total of 4.37 lakh pregnant women were
tested, and 463 were found positive.
According to GSACS officials, the high prevalence rate is because
of rapid urbanization followed by the large numbers of migrant
labourers from within the state as well as from other states.
The state also has the longest coastline with lots of ports and
the largest ship breaking yard, both of which attract migrant
labourers and truck drivers.
GSACS has planned a series of event to work on decreasing the
prevalence rate.
A training for 120 people was conducted by the society this month,
for distribution of a multi-drug regimen, a new treatment for
distribution of a multi-drug regimen, a new treatment for HIV/AIDS
patients. This will be gin from March next year.
Patan gang rape Guj HC upholds conviction of six
Lifers For Five, Sentence Of One Reduced
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court on Saturday upheld the trial court
judgment convicting six teachers in the Patan gangrape case in which a
19-year-old Dalit student was repeatedly raped over a period of time.
The trial court had sentenced all six to life imprisonment. The high
court upheld the life sentence of five teachers but reduced the
punishment of one, Atul Patel, to 10 years.
The high court bench of Justices Akil Kureshi and Z K Saiyed
observed that the gang rape of the student of PTC-DIET was a clear act
of misuse of power as the student was in the teachers’ custody and her
career depended on them.
The bench concurred with the punishment of life imprisonment given
to Ashwin Parmar, Manish Parmar, Mahendra Prajapati, Kiran Patel and
Suresh Patel as the accused had been found guilty of gang rape under
IPC Section 376(2)(G).
However, in the case of Atul Patel, the court found his offence
“solitary” in nature as he had been exonerated from the charges of
criminal conspiracy and gang rape by the lower court. The high court
jailed Atul Patel for 10 years for the offence of rape.
Special public prosecutor Manisha Lavkumar Shah said she was
satisfied with the verdict.
“The court has accepted all our contentions and upheld that there
was enough corroborative evidence. The court even upheld conviction
for criminal conspiracy and for unnatural sex,” the public prosecutor
said.
Arguing as party-in-person before the high court did not help
Ashwin Parmar who was the prime accused in the case. The judge had
earlier warned the convict that not having legal assistance could
prove risky in a criminal appeal. The court had even offered him legal
aid by appointing an amicus curiae.
On February 4, 2008, the Dalit girl — with other female students
of Patan PTC College — had gone to complain to the police about the
crime committed by the six accused teachers.
The teachers were arrested and tried in a fast track court.
Sessions judge S C Srivastava found them guilty and sentenced them to
life imprisonment on March 6, 2009.

VHP TO CEC FOR VIOLATION OF MODEL CODE BY CONGRESS
1 12 2013
New
Delhi. Nov 30, 2013. Vishwa Hindu Parishad(VHP) today sent a letter to
the Chief Election commissioner shri V.S.Sampath requesting him to take
action against the ruling congress party for the Union Cabinets decision
clearing a policy to provide compensation for minority youths
falsely implicated in terror cases. In his letter, the state secretary
General VHP shri Satyendra Mohan said that the impugned resolution by
the government on the basis of religion is not only prohibitory by
Articles 15(1) and 16(2) of the constitution but also marks many
questions on the functioning of our police & Judiciary system.
Free, fair & speedy trial and compensation for damages is the right
of every citizen of the country, why it is being given to Muslims only?,
he asked.
Releasing the letter to media, shri Vinod Bansal, Media Chief of VHP Delhi said that this decision of the Union cabinet on 28th Nov.
2013 i.e. just three days before date of polling in Rajasthan & 6
days before polling in the state of NCT of Delhi is a pre-poll
exploitive stunt meant to influence the minority community to attract
voters. The said religion-based compensation would divide the
country. The impugned resolution by the government on the basis of
religion is prohibited by Articles 15(1) and 16(2) of the constitution.
In his letter VHP demanded action against Congress, the ruling
party, for misusing its official position for the purpose of its
Election campaign thus is a blatant violation of the model code of
conduct and the patently unconstitutional. The Congress party is taking
this action for political benefits by seeking votes on the basis of
religion, hence, it should be debarred from fighting the elections, VHP
added.
This
is to note that the report that recommends the policy will be tabled in
the upcoming winter session of Parliament. The Centre gave its go-ahead
to the ATR on the 18th annual report of the National Commission of Minorities for
the year 2010-11. This was supplemented with a note from the minority
affairs ministry prepared this year. The MHA, however, was of the
opinion that adequate constitutional and security safeguards were
already available to those accused of terrorism to seek legal remedies.

Already a major market for the international natural gas business, these high growth nations will continue to be aggressive contenders for global energy resources. Asian countries, including India, are set to play a key role in the global energy market and offer significant potential for growth of the natural gas industry.
The demand in the region is expected to increase at a CAGR of 4.2 percent and reach nearly 1,111 bcm by 2035 from the current level of around 450 bcm. The 8th AGPS is expected to play a significant role in exploring ways to bridge this growing demand.

The AGPS, being organized since 2003 with the support of the International Gas Union, is today emerged one of the must-attend business conferences in the region.
