The United Arab Emirates has introduced compulsory military service for all Emirati male citizens. The law signals the UAE’s concern over possible turmoil in the Gulf region. The UAE currently has about 51,000 men serving in its armed forces, including an army of 44,000, a navy of 2,500 and an air force of 4,500, according to data from the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies.

Japan omits 640 kg of plutonium in annual IAEA reports

7062014

The Japanese government mistakenly omitted 640 kilograms of plutonium in two annual reports for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the country’s atomic energy agency said. According to the reports, filed for the years 2012 and 2013, plutonium reserves in the country stood at 1.6 tons, while they were approximately 2.2 tons in 2011. The missing 640 kilograms, however, had actually been kept as Mixed oxide (MOX) fuel in one of the reactors in the southern Japanese town of Genkai. All nuclear power plants were shut down in the country following the March 2011 Fukushima disaster, though the country continues to store fuel from the facilities, prom

1,000 migrants rescued by Italy’s coastguard

7062014

Italy’s navy rescued more than 1,000 migrants from three separate boats early Saturday, 74 kilometers from the Italian island of Lampedusa. On Friday, a further 2,500 were recovered from 17 boats. The small island is a key staging point for smugglers of migrants from North Africa to Europe, and the activity has increased significantly since the beginning of the year. At least 34,800 people had made the crossing from Africa to Italy by May, and attempts are thought to be increasing with the good weather conditions facilitating safer crossings. Thousands have died trying to make the Mediterranean crossing to Lampedusa in recent years.

Save Dissent to Save Democracy   THE rising instances of physical violence and threats against political opponents and the inability to accept dissent must raise huge concerns amongst all of us who see democracy as perhaps the really stellar achievement since Independence. AAP’s attack on BJP headquarters and acts of arson committed under the very noses of their elite leadership; the attacks on Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia in Gujarat in the last two days; the recent manhandling of the caretaker of journalist Siddharth Varadarajan’s house by some garden variety thugs; and the violence and threats meted out regularly to their political opponents by political parties is surely deplorable and condemnable. This is a fatally flawed trend which will destroy the very foundations of our democratic institutions if not pushed back with all the strength and condemnation that the civil society can mobilise. Replaying the past To begin with, it must be clarified that we should ...
