Clinton opposes Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal

Oct 8,
US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has opposed the multi-nation Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal. In a major political setback to the US President Barack Obama, his party’s front runner presidential candidate rejected the notion that, if the deal is rejected US would not be able to meet the challenge of China in Asia. She said, the best way US could exercise influence in Asia is to remain the world’s strongest economy at home.
The TPP, is an ambitious idea pushed hard by the Obama administration wherein, 12 pacific-rim countries reached agreement on the Trans-Pacific Partnership following grueling Atlanta negotiations. The TPP aims at addressing the “21st century trade issues” such as intellectual property protections, digital trade rights and protections for investors.

Oct 8,  8:55 AM
Within one year of Swachh Bharat Mission’s launch, about 95 lakh toilets have been constructed across the country as against the target of 60 lakh toilets. This was disclosed by Union Minister for Rural Development and Drinking Water and Sanitation Chaudhary Birender Singh in New Delhi yesterday while launching the Coffee table book on Swachh Bharat organized by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
Mr Singh said, the pace of construction of toilets in rural India has gathered momentum. He said, states like West Bengal, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Maharashtra have taken the lead in construction of individual household and community toilets and these states may achieve the target of Open-Defecation Free status in 2017 or 2018, well ahead of the target of 2nd October, 2019.
The Minister said, the government is committed to driving a pan-India mass movement towards improved sanitation and this is only possible through the collaborative efforts of the people of India.
He said, his Ministry has encouraged devolution of the responsibility of sanitation promotion, upgradation and management to Gram Panchayats by giving flexibility to the States. Swachh Bharat Mission was launched on 2nd of October last year, as one of the largest national campaigns to make the country open defecation free in five years.

Save Dissent to Save Democracy   THE rising instances of physical violence and threats against political opponents and the inability to accept dissent must raise huge concerns amongst all of us who see democracy as perhaps the really stellar achievement since Independence. AAP’s attack on BJP headquarters and acts of arson committed under the very noses of their elite leadership; the attacks on Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia in Gujarat in the last two days; the recent manhandling of the caretaker of journalist Siddharth Varadarajan’s house by some garden variety thugs; and the violence and threats meted out regularly to their political opponents by political parties is surely deplorable and condemnable. This is a fatally flawed trend which will destroy the very foundations of our democratic institutions if not pushed back with all the strength and condemnation that the civil society can mobilise. Replaying the past To begin with, it must be clarified that we should ...
