Maharashtra Open amateur golf championship

24th October, Pune: Currently No. 1 Indian Amateur S. Chikkarangappa is set to make another course record at Maharashtra Open amateur golf championship which will get underway from 25th -28th October at Par-71 Poona Golf Club, Pune. The event is the fourth leg of The Indian Amateur Golf Tour calendar organized by The Indian Golf Union, in association with PAR Sports Leisure Adventure Management Pvt. Ltd. (SLAM G).

Bangalore duo Chikkarangappa and Khalin Joshi along with Delhi’s Gagan Verma – all three top ranked players on the IGU’s merit list shall vie once again for the top slot in this edition of the tour. They are, however, likely to be given a keen competition by local favourites Aditya Bhadarkar and Farrokh Mody.

Chikkarangappa, who won back to back IGU’s amateur tournaments in Coimbatore and Bangalore in June, said, “I have good memories of this course as I am still holding this course record of 8-under 63 which I played in Western India Junior golf Championship in 2008. I am little tired right now because I have been playing too much golf in last one month. Though, I see a great challenge from my friend Khalin Joshi and Chandigarh’s Angad Cheema, I will try to make another course record with a massive lead.”

The first 30 Amateur golfers of the country as per the IGU’s merit list qualify automatically for this tournament, around 53 players have made the grade through a qualifier held at The Oxford Golf & Country Club last week and four are nominees of the Poona Golf Club. The cut, for the Maharashtra Open, will be applied after the first two days of play (36 holes) and the first 45 players will compete for top honours by playing another 36 holes on 27th and 28th October. The tournament will be played in Stroke Play format.

Rajandeep Singh Tiwana, Managing Director, SLAM G said, “Maharashtra Open Championship is one of the prestigious tournaments in the Western part of India. We, at SLAM G understand the importance of commitment of all talented players and we are here to provide best facilities to them. I wish all the very best to all the players. May the best man win! Our endevour has been to provide the most congenial atmosphere, inducing a healthy competition amongst these promising youngsters.”

SLAM G is confident that, with the continuous support of the Indian Golf Union, the excellent arrangements made by The Poona Golf Club, cooperation of the players and the unremitting faith vested in us by our esteemed partners and sponsors like PSPB, Kolte Patil, Akshar Developers, Rohan Builders, Empire Estate, Goel Ganga Group, Reebok, Taylormade, Coca Cola, SportzPower, Save the Children India, Golf Plus as the official Magazine Partner and Deccan Chronicle as the official print media partner.  We hail these partners and sponsors since it is only with their vision, commitment, help  and support to sports in general and golf in particular, that we have been able to raise the bar at every successive tournament and, ultimately, create an enviable niche for The Indian Amateur Golf Tour at the global level.

Save Dissent to Save Democracy   THE rising instances of physical violence and threats against political opponents and the inability to accept dissent must raise huge concerns amongst all of us who see democracy as perhaps the really stellar achievement since Independence. AAP’s attack on BJP headquarters and acts of arson committed under the very noses of their elite leadership; the attacks on Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia in Gujarat in the last two days; the recent manhandling of the caretaker of journalist Siddharth Varadarajan’s house by some garden variety thugs; and the violence and threats meted out regularly to their political opponents by political parties is surely deplorable and condemnable. This is a fatally flawed trend which will destroy the very foundations of our democratic institutions if not pushed back with all the strength and condemnation that the civil society can mobilise. Replaying the past To begin with, it must be clarified that we should ...
