Iran tests new short-range missile


Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi says his country has successfully test-fired a new short-range missile. He says the missile is more accurate than previous models.State-run television showed the launch of a Fateh-110. The missile has a range of more than 300 kilometers and can reach targets in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.Vahidi said the missile's guidance system allows it to strike on land or sea with precision.

He said Iran plans to add the system to all its existing missiles.The United States and European nations are tightening sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programs, targeting its oil exports.Conservative lawmakers in Iran have called for the country's leaders to block the Strait of Hormuz, a key Middle East oil-shipping route.
Iran test-fired a mid-range missile last month.Observers say the weapons tests are meant as a show of force for the United States and Israel.
