Shri Hamid Ansari, the Hon’ble Vice President of India formally inaugurated the NationalCadet Corps Republic Day Camp 2016 at the DGNCC Camp adjacent to Garrison ParadeGround in Delhi Cantt. On his arrival, the Vice President was received by the Director General,Lt Gen Aniruddha Chakravarty, VSM.2069 Cadets including 695 girl cadets drawn from 17 NCC Directorates covering all theStates and Union Territories of the Country are participating in this camp that culminates intothe Prime Minister’s Rally on 28 Jan 2016. The cadets attending the camp will be participatingin a number of activities, like Cultural Programme, National Integration Awareness andInstitutional Training Competitions.A contingent of smartly turned out NCC cadets drawn from all the three wings of Army,Navy and Air Force, presented a “Guard of Honour” to the Vice President on his arrival. TheVice President also visited the Flag Area where he listened to the young cadets briefing abouttheir respective States and appreciated the various social themes displayed in the Flag Areasprepared by them. his address, the Hon’ble Vice President complimented the efforts of National CadetCorps, the largest uniformed organization in grooming the youth of the country and itscontribution towards “Nation Building’. He also mentioned that NCC is and would be in thevanguard of all activities of our youth helping to channelise our youth into a creative force tousher in social changes through spectrum of activities. He also appreciated the impressiveturnout of the ‘Guard of Honour’. The Hon’ble Vice President urged the NCC cadets to avail thebest of NCC training and be more responsible and empowered citizens of the country.

Nagaon, Assam, 5th January 2016: The opening day of the 6th Hockey India Sub Junior Women National Championship 2016 (B division) saw the teams looking to open the tournament on a high. The first match between Hockey Gujarat and Assam Hockey saw the later registering a convincing win by 2-4. The second game was a hard fought match between Citizen Hockey XI and Mumbai School Sports Association which ended in a win for the former by a score line of 1-0. The last match of the day between The Mumbai Hockey Association Ltd and Hockey Madhya Pradesh ended in a draw with both the teams scoring a goal each.
The Pool B match between Hockey Gujarat and Assam Hockey started with an aggressive approach by the Gujarat team who took the lead in the 20th minute in the first half and maintained the lead till the end of the first half. The second half witnessed the Assam team coming out of their shell and attacking with full strength and soon scoring a goal in the 44th minute. They continued their dominance throughout the second half scoring 3 more goals. The Gujarat team scored a consolation goal in the 60th minute before the match ended with Assam taking the game 2-4.
The second clash of the day between Citizen Hockey XI and Mumbai School Sports Association in Pool A was an example of tight defensive tactics by both the teams. The only goal of the match came in the 37th minute from the stick of Namoni Pariya. The former finally went on to take the game 1-0.
The final game of the day was a neck to neck competition in Pool C between The Mumbai Hockey Association Ltd and Hockey Madhya Pradesh. The first half was saw opportunities being created by both the teams. The first team to grab the opportunity was Hockey Madhya Pradesh who converted a penalty corner awarded to them in the 14th minute via Renu Pasi. Mumbai Hockey Association pressed hard and soon got rewarded for their aggression with a field goal from Vaishnavi Rane in the 34th minute. The second half was display of good defence by both the teams and the match ended in 1-1 draw.

Manipur Quake
Normalcy returns in Noney area, 63 km from the State capital, after the panic triggered by the massive earthquake that rocked the region yesterday. Though no extensive damage was caused to human live other than the injuries received by four persons, large stretch of land and properties were damaged in the area. The epicentre of the earthquake was located some 12 km North-West of Noney in the Naga Ching areas of Tameng-long district. BJP Manipur State unit led by MLA of Thongju Assembly Constituency, Th Bishwa- jit with party spokesperson RK Shivchandra visited various parts of Noney today to assess the damages caused by the quake. Almost all houses in No-ney Parts I, II, III, IV and V bore the brunt of the quake as cracks and crevices were found developed.
Monday morning’s tremor measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale that rocked the whole of north-eastern India and claimed at least eight lives, has one again brought into focus the high seismicity of the region which is even otherwise highly prone to various kinds of natural calamities including floods, river-bank erosion, landslides and forest firesNorth-east is located in Zone V – “very severe intensity zone” – and covers about 12 per cent of the country’s total geographical area and about 11 per cent of the population. With the adjoining countries of Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China and Bangladesh sharing space in Zone V, what the North-east requires is a very well-drawn up disaster preparedness plan, apart from a detailed disaster mitigation policy comprising very strict construction by-laws. The region has experienced at least 18 severe earthquakes measuring above 7 on the Richter scale in the last 100 years. These include the ones that struck Shillong (1897) and Assam-Arunachal-Tibet (1950), with the latter changing the course of many rivers including the Brahmaputra. The devastation caused by the Sikkim earthquake of 2011 is indicator of what is in store for the region in terms of seismic activities and their impact. Needless to say, the high seismicity of the region is due to the collision tectonic between the Indian and Eurasian plates in the north and the tectonic movement along the Indo-Myanmar boundary. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has attributed to the increase in earthquake risk in the region due to a spurt in developmental activities driven by urbanization, economic development and globalization. According to the NDMA, loss of human life is no longer the sole determinant of earthquake risk. It has warned of long-term adverse consequences including huge economic losses triggered off by earthquakes, which in turn would cause the local or regional economy to collapse. While Imphal was lucky it does not have too many high rise buildings and continues to respect heritage structures built over 100 years ago, other state capitals in the region – with the other exception of Agartala – have all witnessed haphazard increase in the number of multi-storeyed buildings in the past two decades. Landslides triggered off by heavy rains have become regular feature in most of these cities. Monday’s tremor could be only another warning for both – the authorities and citizens – to wake up to reality.
