Uttar Pradesh government lifts ban on Student Unions

Uttar Pradesh, the newly formed Samajwadi Party government has decided to restore Student Unions in all Universities and Colleges. The Akhilesh Yadav government has directed all Universities and Colleges to hold student union elections. Akhilesh Yadav government has decided tablets and laptops free of cost for high school and Intermediate pass students and allowance for the jobless. With a minimum educational qualification of high school, registered in the employment exchanges will be entitled to an unemployment dole of 1,000 rupees a month till they are employed. About 1,100 crore rupees would be spent annually on this measure and about 3,000 crore rupees would be spent on giving tablets and laptops. In addition, Muslim girls who pass Class 10 will be given a grant of 30,000 rupees for their education and marriage. The Cabinet decisions would be implemented from the next financial year.

Save Dissent to Save Democracy   THE rising instances of physical violence and threats against political opponents and the inability to accept dissent must raise huge concerns amongst all of us who see democracy as perhaps the really stellar achievement since Independence. AAP’s attack on BJP headquarters and acts of arson committed under the very noses of their elite leadership; the attacks on Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia in Gujarat in the last two days; the recent manhandling of the caretaker of journalist Siddharth Varadarajan’s house by some garden variety thugs; and the violence and threats meted out regularly to their political opponents by political parties is surely deplorable and condemnable.
