Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday kicked off his second trip to Turkey to bolster bilateral economic relations, continuing to carry out the country’s economic diplomacy.
Abe aims to export Japan’s nuclear power reactors to Ankara during the visit, which follows one in May when the two countries signed an accord for peaceful use of atomic power, according to local media.
Abe planned to meet with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday in Istanbul and they are expected to call for accelerating talks on nuclear power cooperation in line with the accord, said Japan’s Kyodo News.
Turkey is “an extremely important country in strategic meaning, ” the Japanese leader was quoted as saying at airport before departure, adding he would like to solidify mutual trust with Erdogan and secure and promote national interests through the summit.
During the three-day visit, Abe will seek to pave a way for the two countries to launch negotiations for a bilateral free trade agreement as well as cooperation in security area, reported Kyodo.
