7062014

Italy’s navy rescued more than 1,000 migrants from three separate boats early Saturday, 74 kilometers from the Italian island of Lampedusa. On Friday, a further 2,500 were recovered from 17 boats. The small island is a key staging point for smugglers of migrants from North Africa to Europe, and the activity has increased significantly since the beginning of the year. At least 34,800 people had made the crossing from Africa to Italy by May, and attempts are thought to be increasing with the good weather conditions facilitating safer crossings. Thousands have died trying to make the Mediterranean crossing to Lampedusa in recent years.
