Japan omits 640 kg of plutonium in annual IAEA reports

7062014

The Japanese government mistakenly omitted 640 kilograms of plutonium in two annual reports for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the country’s atomic energy agency said. According to the reports, filed for the years 2012 and 2013, plutonium reserves in the country stood at 1.6 tons, while they were approximately 2.2 tons in 2011. Italy’s navy rescued more than 1,000 migrants from three separate boats early Saturday, 74 kilometers from the Italian island of Lampedusa. On Friday, a further 2,500 were recovered from 17 boats. The small island is a key staging point for smugglers of migrants from North Africa to Europe, and the activity has increased significantly since the beginning of the year. At least 34,800 people had made the crossing from Africa to Italy by May, and attempts are thought to be increasing with the good weather conditions facilitating safer crossings. Thousands have died trying to make the Mediterranean crossing to Lampedusa in recent years.
