Suu Kyi has said that she will run the country regardless through a proxy she will name. But she and the NLD leadership have kept the identity of their nominee a closely guarded secret, even from rank-and-file MPs.
They have done so partly out of fear that a rushed, overly enthusiastic reaction to the election victory could put the sensitive transition at risk. In 1990, the military tossed out results of an election that the NLD won and remained in power.
Suu Kyi has repeatedly said she hopes to reach a compromise with the armed forces that will allow her to assume the presidency.
But talks since the election to bridge the differences failed, sources in her camp said, leading to a deepening rift between Suu Kyi and the military.
The secrecy has fueled a presidential guessing game in a country keen to see the NLD, many of whose members were jailed during years of military rule, complete its transition from democracy movement to ruling party.
Lawmakers from the NLD-dominated parliament that sat for the first time on February 1 said Wednesday that they were eager for the nomination process to get under way.
“It is a very big change, like the Magna Carta,” said Myint Lwin, a lower-house lawmaker from the NLD. “I’m proud to be involved in this history.”
Speculation on the NLD presidential nominee has ranged from Suu Kyi’s personal physician to her chief of staff. In recent days, it has focused on her close friend Htin Kyaw. He runs the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation, a charity to assist people in Myanmar’s poorest areas, founded by Suu Kyi and named after her mother.
Three presidential candidates will be nominated Thursday
– one by the lower house, one by the upper house and one by the military bloc in parliament. The constitution gives the armed forces a quarter of seats in both houses.
“We will propose the vice presidential candidates tomorrow in both Pyithu and Amyotha Hluttaw,” said NLD spokesman Zaw Myint Maung, referring to Myanmar parliament’s lower and upper houses.
Because the NLD has a comfortable majority in both chambers, it will effectively control two of the nominations, with the party’s second pick widely expected to be a representative of one of Myanmar’s ethnic minorities.
The two losing nominees become vice presidents, meaning that a nominee from an ethnic party would be proposed with that role in mind, in line with Suu Kyi’s goal of forming a government for national reconciliation.
Local media have named Thet Swe, a former navy chief who stepped down last year to run in the election representing the far-flung Coco Islands, as one of the possible nominees for the military.
The three nominees do not need to be lawmakers, but they will be vetted by a parliamentary commission.
After that, both houses of parliament will come together for a joint session to vote on the presidency.
The NLD’s huge majority means that the candidate it backs will win.
The president picks the cabinet that will take over from President Thein Sein’s outgoing government on April 1, with the exception of the heads of the home, defense and border security ministries. They will be appointed by the armed forces chief.
There was confusion among members of parliament Wednesday about how soon the presidential vote will take place. A director from the parliament told Reuters that the vote would not be held until at least Monday.
New NLD members of parliament said they remained in the dark about who would be nominated.
“We only have the news from Facebook,” said Sein Mya Aye, a lower house NLD lawmaker.
Aung San Suu Kyi has released a letter to her supporters apologizing for not becoming the country’s next president.
Released to the media Thursday shortly before Myanmar’s parliament was set to begin the process of selecting the new chief executive, the Nobel Laureate apologized for “not fully fulfilling the people’s desire.”
She added that she would persevere and asked for people’s continued support “to reach the goal peacefully.”
Her National League for Democracy party (NLD), won an overwhelming number of seats in parliament during November’s general election. But a clause in the military written constitution prevents her from assuming the nation’s top job because her sons have foreign citizenship.
“I’m very sad. She is the right president. But hopefully one day she will become President. I 100 percent hope,” said Nay Myo Htet, an NLD lawmaker, immediately after reading the party leader’s letter shown to him by VOA News in the lobby of the Pyithu Hluttaw (lower house of parliament).
The parliament in Naypyidaw will begin the presidential selection process by first choosing three vice-presidents, one from the lower house, one from the upper house and one from the military. After a vetting period, the entire parliament will select one of the three to become the nation’s next president.
After the elections last year, Aung San Suu Kyi had said she would run the government, saying she would be “above the president.”
But closed door talks in recent weeks between her and the military had led to speculation that the two sides might reach a deal to suspend the constitutional clause that bars her from the presidency. That appears now not to be the case.
The new government will take office on April 1.
The November general election was the first since a nominally civilian government was installed in 2011 after decades of military dictatorship.

Make public M.B. Shah Commission’s Report
Make public M.B. Shah Commission’s Report on 14 Cases of Corruption charges leveled against Gujarat’s Modi Government.
Gujarat Government’s deliberate conspiracy aimed at striking at the roots of the democracy and full of fraudulent cheating.
Ø Report is not tabled in the Legislative Assembly for last three years.
Ø Governor is being kept in the dark.
Ø Report is not being made public to the people at large.
Ø Govt. had on its own, given ‘clean chit’ to itself.
We demand to immediately place before the Legislative Assembly, Report of the Inquiry Commission, appointed under the Chairmanship of M. B. Shah, former Justice of Supreme Court of India, as per Notification issued on 16-08-2011 by the Legal Department of the Gujarat Government, to inquire into about 14 No. of corruption allegations leveled against the State Government. This Inquiry Commission was appointed under the Article 3 of the Inquiry Commission Act, 1952 of India and 6 crore people of Gujarat have right to know as to what has been contained in that Report as regards corruption indulged into by the Modi Government. Here, it will also be necessary to note that Modi Government had not made appointment of Lok Ayukta for many years and in the face of severe criticism against it, Modi Government had hurriedly made appointment of M. B. Shah Commission.
Here, it will also be noteworthy that the then Leader of Opposition in Gujarat Legislative Assembly and the then President of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee had handed over to H.E. the President of India, on 03-06-2011, a Memorandum, containing 17 allegations of corruption charges indulged into by Modi Government and giving reference of that, this Inquiry Commission was appointed. 14 Nos. of allegations for which inquiry was entrusted to M. B. Shah Inquiry Commission include :
- allocation of lands at much lower or throw away price, to industrialists including Adani, Ruiya and Ratan Tata,
- Scam about fodder for animals
- Scam of fortified flour issued to Anganwadis
- Scam of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation,
- Scam of ‘Sujalam Sufalam’ Schemes.
If the inquiry was entrusted to inquire into these scandals then do not the 6 crore people of Gujarat have a right to know about factual position?
Gujarat Government in its aforesaid Notification stated that “when strong opinion is emerging in the country against corruption in public life then, in the public interest of the people of Gujarat it is necessary for them, to know as to whether there is some substance in these allegations… it is necessary to bring to the notice of the people of Gujarat as to what is factual position in respect of each of the above allegation..”. In spite of such clear statements pronounced at the time of appointing the Inquiry Commission, Modi Government and Anandiben Government of Gujarat have indeed maintained uncanny and ungraceful secrecy over this Report.
Modi Government had played the trick of hiding from public, the report that was obtained from the Inquiry Commission which was appointed for making facts known to the public in the larger interest of the people and same game plan is being resorted or replicated by Anandiben Govt. also. In this way, the State Government is smacking at constitutional protocol and 6 crore citizens of Gujarat are being kept in the dark. The State Government ought to table the Report of the Inquiry Commission upon receiving it but even after lapse of 8 sessions of Legislative Assembly, it has not been presented in the Assembly. Not only that, even H. E. the Governor is kept in the dark by Modi and Anandiben Governments.
In the public interest and for the sake transparency, State Government should make public this Report so as to keep the people informed as to what M.B. Shah Commission, reports on the 14 allegations of corruption. By not making public this Report, the State Government has made breach of public trust and thoroughly nullified principles of transparency and answerability or accountability, which form the basis of Indian Democracy.
Interim Report of M. B. Shah Commission was handed over to the Gujarat Govt. on 27-9-2012. Of course, this Commission was asked to submit its Report by 31-03-2012 but the Commission had made delay for about six months, in handing over its Report. Thereafter, final report was handed over to the State Government by the Commission on 06-11-2013. The Interim Report was placed in the meeting of the cabinet of Gujarat State ministers and same was approved in the cabinet meeting. Thereafter, on the same day itself, an announcement was made by Jaynarayan Vyas, as the spokesman of the Government, that M. B. Shah Commission has given ‘clean chit’ to the then Modi Government and that its Govt. had not practiced any corruption at all. Here, it will be worth noting that on the day on which announcement was to be made on coming into force of code of conduct of assembly elections on the same day itself, announcement was made of having been given this clean chit. This is nothing else than fraudulent cheating of the public at large. Until this date, Government has neither given this Report before the media nor even tabled it in the Legislative Assembly. Thus, the then Modi Government, by quoting reference and by relying on this Report, had tried to en cash political gain prior to the Assembly polls and committed an act of cheating 6 crore people of Gujarat. No one knows as to whether final report of M. B. Shah Commission has been placed in the cabinet meeting of the Ministry of the State.
When demand for this Report was made under the “Right to Information Act” then the Public Information Officer of General Administration Department of the State Govt. had informed on 31-07-2013 that this Report is with the General Administration Department of the State Govt. Whereas, in the year 2013, the present Chief Minister, Anandiben Patel had informed in the Legislative Assembly that the said Report is lying with H.E. the Governor. When an inquiry was made under R.T.I. Act, with the office of the Governor, then his Information Officer had replied on 13-11-2014 that this Report is not at all available with the Governor. Thus, the present Chief Minister, Anandiben had told a lie in the Legislative Assembly and has also misled the Assembly. Moreover, it has been informed through the application made under the R.T.I. Act, on 14-11-2014 that this Report has neither been received in the secretariat of the Legislative Assembly.
Here, it will also be noteworthy that as per Article 167 of the Constitution of India, responsibility lies with the Chief Minister that he should keep the Governor informed about administrative matters of the State but it appears that the then Chief Minister, Narendra Modi had not performed his duty of apprising the Governor about any information of this Report. The present Chief Minister is also following in the footsteps of the heritage or legacy of same grand vibrant and dynamic Gujarat !!! Thus, it clearly means that the Government is not willing to present M. B. Shah Commission Report in the Legislative Assembly nor does it want to give its copy to the people. If no corruption has been practiced in the Govt. in the context of 14 different charges, then why the Govt. is afraid of placing it before the Legislative Assembly? In accordance with our opinion, making an appointment of Inquiry Commission and thereafter not presenting its report before the public is a serious lapse or crime on the part of the Govt., since the expenditure of the Inquiry Commission is funded only from the public money. Hence, in the interest of people of Gujarat and also in the interest and for the sake of democracy and transparency, we demand that the Report of M. B. Shah Commission should be tabled in the present session of the Legislative Assembly.

Pune, March 10, 2016: DSK Shivajians Football Club, the first division I-League side owned and operated by the diversified business conglomerate DSK Group, is all set to realise bigger goals under the leadership of its newly-appointed CEO Neel Shah. Shah is known for his deep experience in the development and commercialization of football in North America and Asia over the past 13 years while holding senior level positions with Major League Soccer, Dentsu and Libero Sports. He will now be instrumental in the management of DSK Shivajians Football Club, Liverpool FC International Academy – DSK Shivajians and programming partnerships for DSK Group’s sports infrastructure projects.
Speaking on the appointment and the way ahead for DSK Shivajians FC, Mr. Shirish Kulkarni, Executive Director, DSK Group and Chairman, DSK Shivajians FC said, “DSK Group has ambitious plans to raise the level of football in the country from the ground up and Neel is the ideal person to lead us in achieving our objectives. In his new role, Mr. Shah will oversee DSK Shivajians FC which is currently the newest entrants into the I-League, India’s top domestic professional football league. LFC-DSK, resulted out of a partnership between global football giants Liverpool FC and DSK Group, is currently considered as the top residential youth program in the country.
On his appointment as CEO, DSK Shivajians FC and Liverpool FC International Academy – DSK Shivajians, Neel Shah said, “I have great respect for the Kulkarni family and how they have chosen to support the growth of football in the country – through investing in infrastructure and youth development. On top of DSK Shivajians’ football properties, Shah will also oversee the programming and partnerships for DSK Group’s sports infrastructure which includes a 15,000-seat football specific stadium, 36 international sports facilities and 9 full-fledged sports academies. These plans are all a part of the 300 acre “Dream City” residential and commercial township that the DSK Group has launched on the Pune-Solapur highway.
Shah’s association with DSK Shivajians FC goes back to 2013 when he was at the forefront of managing the DSK Group – Liverpool FC tie-up along with playing a pivotal role in setting up the initial operations of the Academy between 2013 and 2014.
While at Delhi based Libero Sports, Neel provided advisory services for over 25 football investors and, in 2011, facilitated a landmark partnership for FC Barcelona to establish a permanent base in the country. Most recently, Shah was instrumental in bringing legendary football icon Pele to India to attend the 2015 Subroto Cup Finals in Delhi.
Prior to moving to India in 2009, Neel spent 7 years with New York based Major League Soccer serving most recently as the league’s Director of Fan Development. In that role, he was responsible for overseeing the league’s national grassroots programming, working with MLS clubs to build their local market relevance and liaising with club supporter groups.

Bambolim, 10th March 2016: The second day of the 30th Federation Cup 2016 began with the women’s semifinalists from the senior nationals, Telangana and Delhi, taking on each other. Delhi was without the services of the “Singh Sisters” and sported a young lineup this tournament. After a disappointing close loss yesterday, Telangana were looking to bounce back against the Delhi team. Telangana came out with intent, getting off to a quick first quarter start 22 to 8. They used size to their advantage overpowering Delhi in the paint and outrebounding them 57 to 37. Telangana scored 30 of their points from the inside, led by R. Ramya’s 11 points. The sizeable lead allowed Telangana to use their bench, as eight players got onto the scoreboard. P. Divya was consistent again with 9 points for Telangana. The inexperienced Delhi side fell to a 56-30 loss in their Group B opening game, while Telangana opened its account with their first win.
The first men’s game of Day 2 was also a one-sided affair between Army Red and Kerala Police. Playing their opening game, Army used multiple offensive weapons to dominate Kerala. After establishing a 20-point lead in the first half, Army cruised through the rest of the game to register a 76-43 victory. Army had contributions from several players who were also on the Services team that won the senior nationals. Mayur Bhat led all scorers with 16 points while Jairam Jat had a double-double for the Army with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Manu Thomas was the Army’s enforcer in the paint, protecting the rim with 3 blocks and also pulling down 10 rebounds. Army also had 12 points coming from their bench, while Kerala had zero bench contribution in the game. This marks Kerala Police’s second loss in the tournament, leaving them on the verge of being knocked out.
After a thrilling victory against Telangana yesterday, the South-east Central Railways, Bilaspur (SECR) were involved in another exciting game today against Karnataka. To the surprise of most people, Karnataka shook off a sluggish start to dominate the second and third quarters and build a double-digit lead. Karnataka’s point guard from the senior nationals, Supriya MS knocked down five 3 pointers on her way to 22 points. Youngster Priyanka also played well for Karnataka finishing at the basket en route to her 16 points. For SECR, Seema Singh had another high-scoring game, using her body to control the paint. She, along with Bharti Netam, helped SECR fight their way back into the game in the fourth quarter and take it to overtime. In the overtime period, SECR outscored a fatigued Karnataka team 14 to 7 to close out the game with a 84-77 victory. Seema Singh had a game-high 35 points, while Bharti Netam finished with 26 points.

ICC Cricket for Good and Team Swachh clinics at the ICC World Twenty20 India 2016
In a unique and remarkable CSR initiative under the aegis of ICC Cricket For Good and Team Swachh, players from the 16 participating ICC World Twenty20 India 2016 men’s and women teams will engage with children and adolescents on sanitation and toilet use, as one essential step towards ending open defecation in India.
As the cricket frenzy of the ICC World Twenty20 India 2016 begins, cricketers from 16 teams will join forces to promote messages on health, sanitation and hygiene as part of the innovative Team Swachh campaign.
Team Swachh is the first in a series of collaborations between the ICC Cricket For Good, UNICEF and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with the aim of leveraging the vast reach, appeal and immense power of cricket in India. This visionary collaboration aims to build a social movement for sanitation and toilet use, thereby leading to an open-defecation free India.
During the tournament, cricketers of participating teams will interact with children through a cricket coaching programme and educate in the use of toilets, stressing on the importance of hygiene and sanitation at the specially designed Team Swachh cricket clinics set up at the various stadia.
With more than 564 million people still defecating in the open – the largest number of any single country in the world and half the global total – India’s children suffer the effects of poor toilet use. Almost 1 in 10 of the 1.2 million children under five years old who die every year in the country succumb to diarrhoea, which is linked to poor water, hygiene and sanitation. Some 40 per cent of the country’s children are stunted – chronically malnourished – a condition which is linked to open defecation.
UNICEF India Representative Louis George Arsenault said, “Open defecation affects every aspect of a child’s life putting them at risk of stunting and exposing them to avoidable diseases. The aim is to harness the enormous popularity and appeal of cricket in this country to spread the word about why everyone should use a toilet. We can achieve this if we come together as a team – then we will see real progress.”
UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Sachin Tendulkar also emphasized the need for team play, “Ending open defecation and achieving sanitation for all in India takes a genuine team effort in which all relevant actors–from the Government to the people practicing open defecation, from role models to international development partners–play together as one team.”
At the ICC WT20 Host City Tour during the month of February- March 2016, children and adolescents from local NGOs in the host cities joined Team Swachh and got an opportunity to meet local heroes like Yuvaraj Singh, Venkatesh Prasad, Umesh Yadav, Dinesh Karthik, Manoj Tiwari, Rishi Dhawan, Gurpreet Singh Mann, Pawan Negi, Sameer Dighe, Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, Shubhlakshmi Sharma and Diana Edulji. They got themselves photographed with ICC WT20 Men’s and Women trophies on the Nissan Trophy Tour float that travelled more than 3,000 km- through the eight host cites.These prominent cricketers demonstrated handwashing, played cricket and toilet-based cricket games, reaching out to urban and rural populations with basic hygiene messages.
Speaking at the launch, ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said ICC was committed to working with UNICEF to help improve the health, education, nutrition, and protection of children. Globally, ICC and UNICEF will engage the broader cricketing community to empower children and adolescents. Under the umbrella of Team UNICEF, UNICEF continues to use the power of sport to change the lives of children.
