Bollywood's original superstar Rajesh Khanna, who charmed his way into the hearts of millions of swooning women in the 1960s and 70s, died in Mumbai on Wednesday.
 The Prime Minister has condoled the passing away of  Thespian Rajesh Khanna. The Prime Minister in his condolence message to daughter Twinkle Khanna recalled the fame of  Rajesh Khanna saying that his popularity as a romantic hero in the 1960s and 1970s is a part of our film folklore.
The text of the Prime Minister's condolence message is as follows:
"I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of  your father Shri  Rajesh  Khanna.
Shri Rajesh Khanna was a celebrated artiste who entertained  millions of Indians with his performance in a variety of films. He was called the first Superstar of the Indian cinema and his popularity as a romantic hero in the 1960s and 1970s  is a part of our film folklore. His legacy will live on in the form of the numerous entertaining and acclaimed films that he leaves behind. The powerful roles he essayed in classics like Anand, Aradhana, Kati Patnag and Amar Prem stand testimony to his artistic genius.
Shri Rajesh Khanna was also a colleague in the Congress Party and was a member of the Lok Sabha in the early nineties.
In the passing away of  the Shri Rajesh Khanna  the Indian film industry has lost one of its most successful and most charming heroes.
On this sad occasion,  I convey my heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and Shri Khanna's  countless fans and admirers. I pray for peace of the departed soul."

Charismatic Cine star with following across the border with winsome style and touch of class,heartthrob and  darling of both masses and classes.His movies with talented directors splashed his classical acts with memorable and unforgettable variety of roles enacted with ease ultimately an inspiration to follow, the iconic and legend star spanning four decades.His cause of death with decaying metabolism and fragile body is rumored to be cancer viz  is due to continuity of decay in cells.

An illustrious career Rajesh Khanna gave fifteen consecutive solo superhits between 1969 and 1972 including "Aradhana", "Haathi Mere Saathi", "Anand" and "Amar Prem". 

Debuting with 'Akhri Khat' which he bagged after winning a talent contest in 1965, Khanna went on to star in over 180 films.
He carved a niche for himself in Bollywood dominated in those days by the troika of Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor and the likes of Shammi Kapoor and Rajendra Kumar.
With  'Aradhana' in 1969 opposite Sharmila that catapulted him to superstardom overnight.


Several Bollywood celebrities including actors Rishi Kapoor, Prem Chopra and film maker Sahid Khan visited Khanna's home to pay homage to the actor.
The veteran actor, who lived a secluded life of late, recently appeared for a film advertisment of a well known brand of fan, his faces and eyes sunken.
Khanna's  real fans were shocked to see him a pale shadow of his former self. Blessed with disarming smile and twinkling eyes made him the darling of millions.
Female fans lined the streets he took, covered his car with kisses leaving lipstick marks, married his photographs and wrote love letters to him in blood while young men would sport his dress, hairstyle and dialogues.
Khanna won three Filmfare Best Actor Awards and was nominated for it 14 times.He was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.After 1978, Khanna starred in critically acclaimed films such as "Amado", "Phir Wohi Raat", "Dard", "Dhanwan", "Avtaar" and "Agar Tum Na Hote".
