Syrian ambassador to Iraq defects
Nawah al-Fares said on the Qatar-based satellite channel Al Jazeera on Wednesday that he is quitting as ambassador to Iraq, and also leaving Syria's ruling Baath Party. He said that from this moment forward, he is joining the ranks of the revolution of the Syrian people.Fares criticized the Assad government for killing civilians, and urged all members of the Baath Party to follow his example.
Fares is a prominent Sunni Muslim. Assad's minority Alawite sect relies on Sunni allies to maintain control over the country.He is the second high-profile defector from the Assad government. Last week, a brigadier general close to Assad fled Syria for France.
