Army of President Bashar al-Assad have turned from ground attacks to airstrikes against Syrian opposition forces. The opposition forces have started to fight back against government troops in the area including the capital of Damascus.
Independent group says government attacks killed at least 120 people across Syria over the weekend. Free Syrian Army rebels have destroyed many tanks and driven government forces out of Homs, central Syria, and Idlib in the north.Assad's forces are intensifying airstrikes, mainly on Free Syrian Army's strongholds. The main opposition group, the Syrian National Council, held a meeting in neighboring Turkey on Sunday and elected new leader Abdelbasset Sida, who is an ethnic minority. The group called on other opposition forces to join hands.
Western countries have been disappointed that their assistance has not been effective due to the fragmentation of opposition groups. Hopes are high that stronger unity under the leadership of the Syrian National Council will put additional pressure on Assad's forces.
