Tajik President win new term
Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon has won his fourth term in a landslide victory on Wednesday.
The Central Asian nation’s election committee said on Thursday that Rahmon was re-elected for a new 7-year term by securing about 84 percent of the vote.
Rahmon first became president of the former Soviet republic in 1994.
Tajikistan’s constitution had allowed a president to only serve 2 consecutive terms. But it was amended in 2003 to allow Rahmon to serve another 2 terms.
Rahmon said he will prioritize economic development.
He is expected to try to keep a balance in the country’s relationships with Russia and the United States
