Finance Minister’s tyranny of unelected jibe at the judiciary is unwarranted
The Aam Aadmi Party disagrees with the views of the Union Finance Minister Mr Arun Jaitley on the landmark judgment by the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court, striking down the National Judicial Appointments Commission for appointment of judges.
It is unfortunate that the union Finance Minister, a senior advocate himself, has chosen an unwarranted expression like ‘tyranny of unelected’ while referring to the Supreme Court judgment.
The AAP also disagrees with the parallel drawn by the Finance Minister in comparing the appointment of judges with that of the Election Commission and the CAG. This is a serious contradiction in his stand from his days in opposition when Mr Jaitley used to raise questions on the appointment of Election Commissioners by the government of the day.
The country has not forgotten that Mr Jaitley was the prime mover behind the petition signed by 205 NDA MPs, which was submitted to the then President of India against the appointment of Mr Navin Chawla as an Election Commissioner in 2006.
What is extremely surprising that senior ministers of the Narendra Modi government, instead of accepting that the now junked Constitution amendment bill through which they tried to take control of the judges appointment was seriously flawed, are trying to find faults with every Constitutional institution in a desperate bid to justify their wrong move.
There is no denying the fact that the old Collegium system of judges appointment, which the Supreme Court has restored, suffers from serious drawbacks, but the solution offered could not have been worse than this.
It will be better for the Central government to take into confidence all stakeholders, including the judiciary, and build a widest possible consensus on the extremely important and sensitive subject of judicial reforms rather than turning it into an unhealthy Judiciary Vs Parliament issue.
What is missing in the central government’s response so far is that how does it intend to address the concerns raised by the Supreme Court on safeguarding the independence of judiciary.

India finish second in the 5th Sultan of Johor Cup
Johor Bahru (Malaysia), 18th October 2016: The Indian junior men’s hockey team finished second in a nail biting finish to Great Britain at the 5th Sultan of Johor Cup today at Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The India colts, who were leveled at 2-2 against Great Britain after full time in the title encounter, could not defend the title for the third consecutive year, losing in the penalty shootout 4-3, to the Great Britain boys.
Great Britain began on a confident note drawing first blood in the 5th minute through a penalty corner goal by Luke Taylor. The Great Britain team who had earlier defeated India in the league matches seemed to be in control of their game until India were rewarded with a penalty corner in the 12th minute, which was beautifully converted into a goal by Harmanpreet Singh to bring India at par with the Great Britain score. The next 23 minutes in the first half saw a lot of attacks and counter attacks but neither of the teams could capitalize on their form to find the back of the net. The second half began with India pressing hard to take the lead and they were soon rewarded in the 42nd minute with Gurjant Singh pulling off an absolute stunner, giving India the much needed lead in the game. Great Britain however struck back soon after in the 46th minute through Jack Turner to settle the score at 2-2. The next 24 minutes saw numerous attempts to score from both the teams, but the efficient goal keepers and a strong defense line ensured the match entered the penalty shootout stage. Great Britain finally edged past the Indian colts in the penalty shootout scoring 4 goals as opposed to India’s 3 goals, to be crowned as the new champions of the 5th Sultan of Johor Cup.
‘It’s hard to miss out on the title from somewhere as close as this, but it’s a game and this defeat today will only help us learn from our mistakes for the future. I am completely satisfied with the boys performance and I couldn’t have asked for more from them. Penalty shootouts are always unpredictable and it’s unfortunate that we could not finish it on a winning note. I would like to congratulate Great Britain on being crowned the new champions.” said Harendra Singh, Coach, Indian Junior Men’s Team after the loss.
India had earlier finished at the top of the table in the league encounter just losing one match ironically to Great Britain. Sumit Kumar and Harmanpreet Singh with 3 goals each have been the top scorers for India in tournament.

11 killed in dual suicide bombings in Nigeria
At least eleven people were killed when two female suicide bombers attacked a refugee population fleeing Boko Haram forces in Nigeria, police said on Sunday. The bombs were detonated by the assailants who had been hiding among dozens of displaced persons in a remote Dar village on Saturday evening. Following the explosion, Boko Haram gunmen killed the survivors. “Residents fled to the bush. After a while, two women who disguised as fleeing locals blew themselves up … while the gunmen shot at survivors,” the former head of the Madagali local government council, Maina Ularamu told reporters. The jihadist group which has been active since 2002, pledged its allegiance to the Islamic State in March. Since then the number of deadly attacks has increased.
Pentagon reports killing Al-Qaeda leader in Syria
US-led coalition reported that it has conducted two dozen airstrikes against Islamic State targets. Eighteen airstrikes in Iraq hit targets near nine cities, including Sinjar, Ramadi, Mosul and Kisik. The five strikes in Syria took place near Abu Kamal, Aleppo and Raqqa.

Slovenia will not take in ‘unlimited number’ of refugees
Slovenia announced that it is not going to grant admission to an infinite number of refugees urging Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia to take measures to curb the refugee inflow.
“We cannot accept (an) unlimited number of migrants if we know that they cannot continue their journey,” Bostjan Sefic, state secretary of the Slovenian interior ministry, said during a news conference.
