HOW KENYA CONFIRMED THE DEATHBED OF WTO

Reflections on the 10th Ministerial Conference in December 2015

Horace G. Campbell

The outcome of the meeting, the so-called Nairobi Package, was a slap in the face for the peoples of the South. It was especially egregious that the US used the 10th Ministerial, with the help of the Kenyan leadership, to undermine the future of Pan-African trading relations and to drive a wedge between the BRICS societies and those that the US wants to manipulate in the poor countries. The 10th Ministerial has hastened the demise of the WTO.

PARIS CLIMATE TERROR COULD ENDURE FOR GENERATIONS

Patrick Bond

cc FdlM
Paris witnessed both explicit terrorism by religious extremists on November 13 and, a month later, implicit terrorism by carbon addicts negotiating a world treaty that guarantees catastrophic climate change. The first incident left more than 130 people dead in just one evening’s mayhem; the second lasted a fortnight but over the next century can be expected to kill hundreds of millions, especially in Africa.

ANOTHER CLIMATE STRATEGY IS POSSIBLE

Ariel Salleh

cc JS
Climate politics will go nowhere as long as peoples’ movements remain locked into debates over arithmetic. It is time to re-set the start line for climate struggles in a place that transcends the old episteme.

2015 AS A REPEAT OF 1965 IN BURUNDI: THE STUBBORNNESS OF POLITICAL HISTORY

David-Ngendo Tshimba

cc AP
If 1965 consists of the first time in recorded history of contemporary Burundi that people lost their lives simply because of who they were ‘ethnically’ considered to be, 2015 is yet another moment in the post-colonial history of Burundi that people are losing their lives simply because of who they are ‘politically’ considered to be.

PATRONAGE, CLIENTELISM AND ECONOMIC INSECURITY IN UGANDA

Vick Lukwago Ssali

cc AP
Conversations with Ugandans reveal that people at the grassroots see ethnic federalism as one possible way of restoring and guaranteeing both socio-political accountability and economic security in a system that relies too much on increasingly narrow ethnic and political clientelistic networks.

MUGABE IS A FOOL, BUT NOT FOR THE REASONS YOU THINK

Douglas Schorr

Zimbabwe’s violent dictator is once again the darling capitalist of the West. The reason is the standard and most simple: Zimbabwe has the world’s second largest reserves of platinum, its uranium production is going westwards and Mugabe has agreed to toe the line on the marketing of the world’s largest ever single field diamond operation, Marange.

THE LEGACY OF TADEO NYEBIRWEKI

One man’s approach to sustainable development and climate change

Odomaro Mubangizi

cc AUS
As the world continues to search for viable solutions to the issues of sustainable development and climate change, why not look at the ordinary men and women who have done extraordinary things in fighting poverty and preserving the environment? One such inspirational figure is Tadeo Nyabirweki.

PALESTINIANS RESIST ZIONIST TERROR…

…plus U.S., European, Arab royal, Turkish and Nigerian terror

Glen Ford

cc AP
The West has forced millions to become wandering, destitute refugees, as it destroys nations and peoples that get in the way of Empire. Palestinians have lived this reality for 67 years. Beirut sits at the lip of the volcano.

KENYA’S TOP PAPER SUSPENDS EDITOR FOR CRITICIZING GOVERNMENT

Denis Galava

East and Central Africa’s largest media house, Kenya’s Nation Media Group, has this week sparked a national storm after suspending a senior newspaper editor for publishing an editorial sharply critical of the government of President Uhuru Kenyatta. Kenyans are wondering whether the disciplining of Denis Galava indicates NMG’s growing coziness with the scandal-ridden regime that is relentlessly dragging the country back to dark days of dictatorship. Below is the controversial editorial published by Daily Nation on January 2, 2016.

THE MILITARY, ‘ZARIA MASSACRE’ AND A DEFECTIVE FEDERATION

Chido Onumah

At least 300 Shia sect members, and likely many more, were killed and hundreds more injured in December when the Nigerian army confronted the group in the north of the country. This deadly encounter reveals – once again – a country that is sleepwalking to a catastrophe.

ISLAM: DISHONEST LEADERS, OVERZEALOUS FOLLOWERS

Abdulrazaq Magaji

Islamic militancy which targets non-Muslims, often Christians, is deeply rooted in the historical discord that exists within Islam itself. Prophet Mohammad preached peaceful co-existence particularly with Christians. Muslims who promote wanton violence in the name of their religion are simply misguided about its true teachings.

THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES?

Henning Melber

Namibian President Geingob’s image as a flamboyant intellectual filling the shoes of a skilled statesman is showing wear and tear. Intolerance and temper limit his ability to engage with critical views constructively. Add to that an aloof and dismissive attitude bordering on arrogance, and the people of Namibia have reason to worry about the prosperity promise.

THE ORIGINAL SIN OF THE FIRST GENERATION LEADERS: A LESSON FOR THE NEW GENERATION

Munyonzwe Hamalengwa

The first generation of African leaders had some excellent qualities like nationalism, patriotism, vision and less corruption. But they suffered from the grave original sin of staying in power too long by undemocratic means. The continent is still harvesting the sour fruits of their legacies in the likes of Mugabe, Museveni and Kagame.

A STUDY IN CULTURAL IMPERIALISM IN AFRICA

Chernoh Bah’s ‘The Ebola Outbreak in West Africa’

Joshua Lew McDermott

AN EXEGETIC READING OF OTSIEMI’S ‘LA VIE EST UN SALE BOULOT’

Peter Wuteh Vakunta

This sociological novel provides readers with an opportunity to read the kind of Africanized French that is spoken in the streets and neighborhoods in Gabon’s major cities such as Libreville. The text is replete with standard French words, argot and indigenous language words and expressions that endow it with a reasonable dose of cultural authenticity.

Foreign Players to add sheen to Coal India – Hockey India League
New Delhi, 10th January, 2016:  The 4th edition of the Coal India Hockey India League the premier league for Hockey in the World today is all set to see an inflow of international talent for the 34 day long hockey extravaganza. The six team annual franchise based hockey league, the flagship event of Hockey India – the apex body governing the sport in the country and sanctioned by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) is scheduled to be played across six venues in India from 18th January – 21st February 2016. The six Franchises battling for supremacy in the richest field hockey league in the world are Jaypee Punjab Warriors, Delhi Waveriders, Kalinga Lancers, Uttar Pradesh Wizards, Dabang Mumbai and defending champions Ranchi Rays.
The foreign players have been the biggest attraction for the franchises besides the Indian national team players. One of the biggest buys of the season made by the Kalinga Lancers is German stalwart Moritz Fürste. Moritz Fürste was named as the Euro Hockey League’s Most Valuable Player in the 2007-2008 and 2009-2010 Seasons. At the European Championship 2011 he got the Award as Most Valuable Player of the tournament. The Olympic gold medal winner and FIH player of the year bagged a price of US $105,000. Moritz Fürste who is one of the best midfielders in the world will be looking to put his stamp on the tournament in the new franchise.
Tobias Hauke a part of the 2008 and 2012 summer Olympic gold medal winning team will be adding to the arsenal of the Uttar Pradesh Wizards team. He has been nominated for the FIH Player of the Year. He is a defensive midfielder and will be adding the necessary play making and defensive strength to the backline of the Uttar Pradesh Wizards with VR Raghunath and the celebrated Indian Goal Keeper PR Sreejesh. Tobias Hauke commanded an astonishing amount of $96,000 against his base price of $ 25,000 this year.
Another German who will be a major crowd puller will be Florian Fuchs. The 24 year old German striker was awarded the FIH Young Player of the Year in 2012. He has been a part of the 2012 Olympic winning German team and champions trophy gold medallist at Bhubaneshwar in 2014. He is one of the most lethal strikers in the world and was picked up by Dabang Mumbai for $96,000.
The HIL auctions saw a lot of international midfielders being picked up by the franchises. The Australians along with the Germans were highly in demand. Simon Orchard who was bagged by the Jaypee Punjab Warriors for $71,000 will be a major boost for the team. Simon will be playing alongside the Indian captain Sardar Singh and it will be two world class acts on display. Simon has won several medals with them including gold at the 2009 Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy, gold at the 2010 Men’s Hockey World Cup and gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Simon and Sardar will be the play making combination look out for in the Coal India HIL 2016.
Ashley Jackson is a creative treat have in the team and the Ranchi Rays made the right decision by retaining him for a sum of $95,000. Jackson made his debut in 2007 for the England at the age of 19. He was named FIH Young Player of the Year 2009 and is the first English player to receive this accolade. Skipper Jackson led his team from the front and scored 12 goals to help the Rays clinch the 2015 HIL title. Out of the 12 goals, 11 came from penalty corner conversions, leading him to become the top-scorer of 2015 and also the Player of the Tournament. He will be at the forefront of the attack of the Ranchi Rays and will be looking to defend their title once again.

Duterte proposes another UN August 21, 2016 Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte railed against the United Nations today after it called for an end to the wave of killings unleashed by his war on drugs, saying he might leave the organisation. Duterte also said the Philippines will invite China and African nations to form another global organisation in place of United Nations, as world body is not doing enough to address hunger and terrorism. There appears to be human rights working for terrorist and mafia in third world to keep their states in dire state. Two UN human rights experts last week urged Manila to stop the extra-judicial executions and killings that have escalated since Duterte won the Presidency. About 900 suspected drug traffickers have been killed since he came to power after winning the election on May 9.
