Indo-US joint military exercise Yudh Abhyas concludes in Uttarakhand
Indo- US joint military exercise- Yudh Abhyas concluded at Chaubattia in Uttarakhand today. The twelve day excercise which began on 15 of this month was aimed at building positive military relations between the two countries.
It also provided a platform for the two armies to understand each other’s tactical and operational methodologies.
The training culminated in a 48 hours consolidation and validation exercise in which troops carried out a daring rescue and destroy mission in the general area of Pilkholi near Chaubattia.
The exercise was conducted with focus on counter Insurgency and counter terrorism operations under UN Mandate. Besides, emphasis was also laid on use of state of the art equipment for surveillance, tracking and identification of terrorists, use of specialist weapons for close quarter battles, sensing and neutralizing IEDs and establishing effective communication.
PM: Indus, Chenab, Jhelum as per the Treaty, Blood and water cannot flow together
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held a meeting in New Delhi to take stock of 56-year old Indus Water Treaty in the wake of sustained cross border attacks including Uri terror strike. According to sources, Prime Minister said in the meeting that blood and water cannot flow together.
They said, it was decided to set up an inter ministerial task force to exploit the full potential of western rivers – Indus, Chenab, Jhelum as per the Treaty. These rivers were allocated to Pakistan under the treaty. Under this arrangement, India can use 20 per cent of the water of these rivers for irrigation, transport and power generation which is currently not being done.
It was also decided to expedite construction on Pakal Dul , Sawalkot and Bursar Dams on Chenab river. The country will review construction on Tulbul navigation project on which work was suspended. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Nripendra Mishra, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, Water Resources Secretary Shashi Sekhar and other senior officials attended the meeting.
The Indus river treaty was signed in 1960 by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and then Pakistan President Ayub Khan. The treaty, brokered by the World Bank, is often considered to be one-sided and there has been growing clamour to relook at it.
Russia to launch regular observation flights over U.S.territory
Russian inspectors will start regular observation flights over U.S. territory Monday under the Open Skies Treaty, the Russian Defense Ministry has said.
“The observation flights will be carried out between Sept. 26 and Oct. 1, from the Open Skies airfield Travis (in California) with a maximum range of 4,250 kilometers,” the ministry said Monday.
It said Russian aircraft with U.S. experts on board will monitor U.S. compliance with the treaty.
The observation flights are part of the confidence-building measures in Europe after the Cold War under the international Open Skies Treaty, which was signed in March 1992 and took effect beginning 2002. The treaty has currently 34 state parties, including Russia and most NATO members.

Plight of Mohajirs in Pakistan discussed in the UN Human Rights Council
The International Institute for Mohajirs organized a conference on the plight of Mohajirs in Pakistan, on the sidelines of the 33rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on September 23, 2016. Speakers at the conference included Ryszard Czarnecki, Vice President European Parliament, Mohammad Khan, human rights activist from Karachi and Arbaz Khan, President, European Mohajir Network.
Mohammad Khan, while updating the audience on the current human rights situation in Pakistan and problems being faced by the Mohajirs, stated that the Pakistani government continued to ostracize the Mohajirs and through various laws, ensure that members of the community continued to remain ‘outsiders’ in the country that they had chosen to adopt after the formation of Pakistan in 1947. He appealed to the UN to put pressure on the Pakistani government to improve the situation of Mohajirs in the country.
Arbaz Khan, in his speech stated that despite the contributions of Mohajirs to Pakistani culture and society, the Mojahir community was discriminated against and their rights regularly violated. He acussed the Pakistani government of sponsoring intolerance and hatred against the Mojahirs and deploying various forms of discrimination against them. He concluded by stating that Mohajirs were peace loving people and only wanted to be recognised for their contributions, provided with security, honour and employment.
Ryszard Czarnecki in his comments stated that though the issue of the Mohajirs had not been raised in the European Parliament, he thought that it was a serious human rights issue in Pakistan and the time was right for the European Union to take note of this problem.
Candle light vigil for Pakistan’s ‘Kill and Dump Policy’ in Balochistan

Baloch leaders Brahumdagh Bugti and Mehran Marri, along with Ryszard Czarnecki, Vice President of the European Parliament, and Canada-based Executive Director of Baluch House, Tarek Fateh, participated in a candle-light vigil outside the UNHRC in Geneva on September 23, in memory of Baloch nationals who had lost their lives due to Pakistan’s ‘Kill and Dump Policy’ in Balochistan.
Speaking to the media on the occasion, Ryszard Czarnecki, Vice President of the European Parliament, said that the Baloch problem was not just an internal issue of Pakistan since, as a partner of the European Union, Pakistan had the responsibility to ensure that there were no human rights violations in the country. He added that in case the European Union kept silent on the issue, “our silence would be our shame”.
Tarek Fateh spoke of the abuse of the Baloch people and the secular character of the region by the Pakistani Army. He called on the international community to put pressure on Pakistan to allow journalists to Balochistan so that the world would be able to see the stark reality. Mehran Marri, the Baloch Permanent Representative to the UN, demanded the withdrawal of the Pakistani forces from Balochistan, who were responsible for the ‘Kill and Dump ‘ policy against Baloch citizens. Brahumdagh Bugti, President of the Baloch Republican Party, said that the Pakistani government had for long escaped scrutiny of the international community, for the atrocities committed against the people of Balochistan. However with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi raising the issue, it had now caught the attention of the world. He hoped that the Baloch people would continue to receive this support from India.
The silent vigil was attended by many who wanted to express solidarity with the people of Balochistan, and show their support for their struggle against the human rights atrocities by the Pakistani establishment.
