N. Ireland voters put power-sharing to renewed test

Northern Ireland’s voters are deciding who should lead them, an election overshadowed by acrimony between the dominant Irish Catholic and British Protestant parties. Thursday’s elections to the Northern Ireland Assembly will determine which parties on each side of the community divide are eligible to form a unity government, the central goal of the region’s 1998 peace accord. Leaders of the major Catholic-backed party, Sinn Fein, collapsed the previous assembly in February in a showdown with their erstwhile government partners, the Protestants of the Democratic Unionist Party. A total of 228 candidates are contesting 90 legislative seats. Polls suggest Sinn Fein and the Democratic Unionists will retain top positions

Erdogan says Turkey emergency rule to continue

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said emergency rule, government decrees and dismissals of staff suspected of links to last July’s attempted coup will continue until “everything settles down,” NTV and other news channels reported on Thursday. Emergency rule was imposed in Turkey after the failed putsch on July 15, enabling the government to bypass parliament in enacting new laws and to limit or suspend rights and freedoms when deemed necessary. Erdogan was speaking to reporters on his airplane on his return from a visit to Pakistan. Turks will vote on April 16 on a constitutional reform sharply boosting the president’s powers.

5.5 quake hits SE Turkey

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 hit a town in southeastern Turkey on Thursday, causing a number of injuries, officials and news reports said. The government-run Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said the earthquake was centered in the town of Samat, in Adiyaman province. It was followed by four more temblors, the strongest measuring 4.4. Yusuf Firat, the mayor for Samsat told NTV television that at least five people were injured in the quake, which knocked down some buildings in the town. The US Geological Survey put the magnitude at 5.6 and said the quake was very shallow at around 10km deep.

London, 8th March 2017: The University of Delhi is home to the world’s 16th-best Development Studies program, according to the latest QS World University Rankings by SubjectThe seventh edition of QS Quacquarelli Symonds’s analysis of subject-specific university performance, released today, lists the world’s best universities for the study of 46 different subjects. QS’s subject tables were viewed more than thirty million times throughout 2016.
Harvard University is number-one in 15 tables, ahead of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (12 number-one spots).
The University of Delhi has risen two places for Development Studies, and provides one of India’s four top-50 finishes across the 46 tables – one more than last year. The others are provided by:
  •     The Indian School of Mines, which has leapt from the 51-100 category to 24thfor Engineering – Mineral and Mining;
  •     Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, which has debuted in the Engineering – Mineral and Mining ranking in 35th position;
  •     Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, which ranks 49th for Electrical Engineering.
This slight increase in the number of Indian institutions providing top-50 programs is one of Indian higher education’s major highlights this year. So, too, is the fact that, as India seeks to provide the strength in depth necessary to educate one of the world’s largest tertiary-age populations, it has seen the number of universities ranked for at least one subject increase. Last year, 22 Indian institutions were ranked at least once; this year, that number increases to 28.
Furthermore, India also increases its overall share of places. Last year, its 22 universities were ranked 117 times, taking 1.27% of all available places. This year, its 28 universities are ranked 151 times, representing 1.32% of overall places. The below table provides a visual overview of India’s year-on-year performance:

However, this year’s release still indicates the level of work necessary for Indian higher education. At the top levels of the subject tables – the top 200, top 100, and top 50 – Indian universities see a numerical increase in places but not a substantial proportional increase.
Furthermore, India’s IITs, IIMs, and IISC Bangalore are not yet gaining ground on the world’s top institutions. These higher education providers are ranked 95 times in total this year. This is an increase from 82 in 2016. However, they see a larger number of drops in rank (24) than increases in rank (9).
IIT Madras is responsible for most of the improved positions. It rises to the 101-150 category for Mathematics, to the 151-200 category for Physics & Astronomy, and into the top 100 for Materials Science.
The following table lists the institutions that feature in the top 10 of the 46 subject tables most frequently:

QS have also released their QS World University Rankings by Faculty. The rankings by Faculty assess university performance across five broad groups of subjects: Arts & HumanitiesEngineering & TechnologyLife Sciences & MedicineNatural Sciences, and Social Sciences & Management. India’s best rank in the Faculty tables is Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD)’s 71st-place rank in the Engineering & Technology faculty area. It is closely followed in the same faculty area by IIT Bombay, which ranks 78th.
QS have added four subjects to this year’s project: Anatomy & PhysiologyHospitality & Leisure ManagementSports-related Subjects, and Theology, Divinity, and Religious Studies.
The final tables are the result of QS analysing:
  • Over 185 million citations;
  • Over 43 million papers;
  • 194,000 responses to their global Employer Survey;
  • Over 305,000 responses to their global Academic Survey.
Bibliometric data is provided by Scopus/Elsevier, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature. The full QS World University Rankings by Subject tables can be found here. The full methodology can be found here.

Duterte proposes another UN August 21, 2016 Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte railed against the United Nations today after it called for an end to the wave of killings unleashed by his war on drugs, saying he might leave the organisation. Duterte also said the Philippines will invite China and African nations to form another global organisation in place of United Nations, as world body is not doing enough to address hunger and terrorism. There appears to be human rights working for terrorist and mafia in third world to keep their states in dire state. Two UN human rights experts last week urged Manila to stop the extra-judicial executions and killings that have escalated since Duterte won the Presidency. About 900 suspected drug traffickers have been killed since he came to power after winning the election on May 9.
