INDIA GO 2-0 IN THE 5TH SABA CHAMPIONSHIP 2017

India go 2-0 in the 5th SABA Championship 2017
  • The winners of the South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) Championship will qualify for the FIBA Asia Cup taking place in Lebanon in August this year.
  • The winner also ensures qualification for its country’s top club team in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup – a tournament where the premier club teams of Asian countries go head to head.
  • India are defending champions and favourites looking to complete a five-peat. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are the biggest threats to India’s five-peat.
Male/Bengaluru, 21st May 2017: In the 5th South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) Championship underway in Maldives, India posted its second straight win, this time over Sri Lanka.

INDIA BEAT SRI LANKA 88-61

Playing its second round robin encounter, defending champs India tamed Sri Lanka 88-61 in a fairly competitive game. The first and third quarters were particularly neck and neck, but India built double digit leads in the other two periods to stay undefeated in the competition.
India centre Amritpal Singh had a second straight game scoring in double digits, with 28 points to go along with 16 rebounds. Veteran shooting guard Vishesh Bhriguvanshi also enjoyed a double-double night with 26 points and 10 assists.
For Sri Lanka, Thammitage Perera came off the bench to top score with 18 points, with Joseph Croos chipping in with 13. The Island nation connected 11 times from beyond the arc but also turned the ball over 26 times.
To counter the size mismatch, Sri Lanka sent India to the foul line a whopping 38 times, but that strategy provided little benefit as India scored 25 points from the charity stripe.
Amritpal Singh was declared player of the match for the second straight time.
India will now face another challenger Bangladesh next on 22nd May, while Sri Lanka takes on Nepal.
India (Amritpal Singh 28 pts & 16 reb, Vishesh Bhriguvanshi 26 pts & 10 ast) bt Sri Lanka (Thammitage Perera 18 pts, Joseph Croos 13 pts) 88-61 [23-17, 27-17, 16-15, 22-12]

INDIAN ECONOMY SO FAR

(May 22, 2017)
GST rates unlikely to hurt inflation:
A day after the GST council decided on the rates, domestic rating agency Icra today said, the structure is unlikely to fan inflation.
It said in a note, with the effective tax rate intended to be brought down on most items, as well as a large portion of the CPI basket being kept in the exempted category, there is likely to be a limited impact of the GST on goods inflation.
On services front, where the standard rate has been kept at 18 per cent, it said availability of input tax credit may soften the impact of GST on services inflation in the future.
Inflation to fall by 2%:
Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia has said, Inflation will fall by two per cent on implementation of the goods and services tax, GST, and will create buoyancy in the economy. In an interview to PTI, he said the all-powerful GST Council will meet next week to decide on tax rates of contentious items like gold, bidi and biscuits, just in time for its rollout from July 1.
Mr Adhia also expressed confidence that the requirement of compensation to make up for revenue loss of any state will be fulfilled from cess on demerit and luxury goods like car and tobacco.
With the stage set for the biggest overhaul of India’s tax system since Independence, the government will launch a massive awareness campaign to educate consumers about GST so that they are not fleeced by traders in the name of new tax.
The Council over the two days last week assigned tax rates to more than 500 services and 1,200 goods by setting them in five broad rates of 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent.
GST will be a single nation-wide sales tax replacing astring of central and state levies.
Tejas Express to be flagged off today:
The high speed, air-conditioned Tejas Express will be flagged off today from Mumbai to Goa.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu will flag off the premium luxury train through video conferencing.

However, due to constraints related to rail tracks, it will run at a speed of 160 kilometres per hour.

CHOKING ON PLASTIC

100 MILLION plastic bottles are thrown away every day, choking our oceans in plastic waste. Governments meet in days to outline clean ocean commitments. If a million of us call on top polluters to stop the flood of plastics, the Head of the UN’s Environment Programme will announce our petition to the plenary and use our voices to help oceans breathe again.

Dear friends,
By 2050, our oceans will have more plastic trash than fish.
It’s shameful. Half of the plastic made we use just once and throw out, choking our seas and all the animals in it.
But in days, our governments can stem this tide when they meet at a historic summit to outline their clean ocean commitments. Public pressure just got #2 polluter Indonesia to commit to a 70% reduction in plastic waste! Now we need to go after the other top polluters.
If one million of us get behind a global call, the Head of the UN Environment Programme will announce our petition from the summit podium and work with us to push countries to ban single-use plastics and let oceans breathe again. Add your name:
No matter where we live, each breath we take connects us to our oceans. Most of our oxygen is generated by them. They regulate our climate and weather, turn water into clouds that give us rain. And oceans provide a home for near 80% of all living things on earth. We can’t live without our oceans.
But now, our oceans can’t live without us.
Humans have destroyed ocean health and we need to fix it. The good news is, more than half the plastic trash in our oceans come from just five nations. If we focus global attention on the biggest polluters now, we can create global system-change for plastic-free seas. What’s missing is the motivation — and that’s where we come in.
Let’s build a massive call on our governments to stop suffocating our oceans. Once we reach a million signers, Avaaz will launch targeted campaigns on the top polluters to ramp up the pressure for them to act.
Our community has fought fiercely to protect magnificent rainforests and vast areas of our oceans. Now time is running out to kill plastic pollution before it kills us.
With hope and determination,
Dalia, Lisa, Alice, Carol, Danny and the entire Avaaz team
