‘Industrial foods’ or mass-produced processed food commodities play an increasing part in diets across the world.  However, in India, some of these commodities are invested with a distinctive quality: they are independent of the complex religious, regional, caste and gender codes that govern food and eating.  My lecture will focus on the role of processed foods in the cultural imagination of Indians across regions, classes, and the rural-urban continuum.  I argue that the consumption practices such industrial foods engender are productive sites for imagining citizenship cutting across social hierarchies, creating new identities and diluting stigmatized ones.  Even as poor Indians struggle to secure access to basic food, they also attempt to include more processed foods in their diets – a tendency that shows the significance of these commodities in the politics of social inclusion and exclusion. Amita Baviskar is Professor of Sociology at the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi.  Her research focuses on the cultural politics of environment and development in rural and urban India.  Her book In the Belly of the River: Tribal Conflicts over Development in the Narmada Valley and other publications explore the themes of resource rights, popular resistance and discourses of environmentalism.  She is currently studying food and agrarian environments in western India.  Amita Baviskar’s recent publications include the edited books Contested Grounds: Essays on Nature, Culture and Power; Elite and Everyman: The Cultural Politics of the Indian Middle Classes (with Raka Ray); and First Garden of the Republic: Nature on the President’s Estate.  She has taught at the University of Delhi, and has been a visiting scholar at Stanford, Cornell, Yale, SciencesPo and the University of California at Berkeley.  She was awarded the Infosys Prize for Social Sciences in 2010.

Best wishes Team GBO A Lookback at JUMPSTART 2017 India’s only conference for children’s content creators, JUMPSTART, rolled into its ninth edition this year at the India International Centre on 4 and 5 August 2017. With this edition’s theme of Learn + Innovate, JUMPSTART 2017 looked at learning in new ways, and its impact on authoring blended experiences. From the moment this edition started taking shape, it was envisioned as a forum to create new pathways, make new stories, learn new skills and understand new technologies in children’s learning. The sessions and masterclasses that unfolded over the two days fulfilled the thought and concept behind this event. DAY 1 AT JUMPSTART 2017 : INSPIRATION Day 1 of JUMPSTART 2017 saw an attendance of nearly 150 participants. The sessions opened with a welcome note from Prashasti Rastogi, Director, German Book Office New Delhi, sharing with the audience the idea behind having Learning + Innovation as the theme, and inviting the participants to get inspired and perspire over the two days. The plenary session ‘Checkpoint Learning: Where are we now?’ with author Sonia Duggal, education entrepreneur Prof. M. M. Pant, educationist Nina Sehgal, and school student Rohit Nema, was moderated by Amit Kaushik, CEO of Australian Centre for Educational Research. The diversity of the panel enriched the discussion as they talked about the current scenario of learning in urban Indian classrooms, and the pain points and possible solutions for the same. ‘Plug ‘n’ Play: Game-based Learning’ started with a live poll conducted by the session moderator Vishnu Karthik, Associate Director, The Heritage Schools. Session speakers Amruth B R, CEO of GuruG Learning Labs, and Jairaj Bhattacharya, CEO of ConveGenius discussed how teachers can adopt and have adopted game-based learning practices as well as gamification practices to improve student learning in their classroom, and how creators need to rewire their content to eliminate cognitive biases for making an impact in gamified systems. Celebrated dancer and choreographer Geeta Chandran had the audience listening in rapture during her session on Dance in Education. She spoke about the need to understand dance as co-curricular, and how it is being integrated with academic learning.  She followed her talk with a mesmerizing demonstration of Tandava Nritya. The event remained houseful since the beginning of the first session, and the audience was glued to the seats with the line-up of sessions and speakers as Devdutt Pattanaik came up on stage next. The master storyteller shared his take on the culture of stories coupled with his renowned manner of storytelling. His keynote address on stories flowed into the following session, ‘Plug ‘n’ Play: Storytelling for Learning Outcomes’. On the panel were author Venita Coelho, storyteller Rituparna Ghosh, and illustrator Mortiz Stetter, moderated by educationist Preminda Langer. Different modes of storytelling—oral, written and visual—were brought together under the theme of children’s learning as the panelists presented their work and discussed the impact of storytelling in creating a way of learning which is more integrated with life experiences. Soon after, JUMPSTART 2017 partner Scholastic India unveiled their upcoming title Boy No. 32, written by author and JUMPSTART 2017 speaker Venita Coelho. It was a soft launch where Venita introduced her book as a rip-roaring adventure that will have the readers on tenterhooks throughout. THE JUMPSTARTER EXPERT TABLES The JUMPSTART Expert Tables was the finalé of Day 1. Select participants got a chance to interact with the experts of their preference in a 5-minute speed-dating format. Amruth, Moritz Stetter, Preminda Langer, Rituparna Ghosh, V. Anand, Venita Coelho and Manisha Chaudhry were the experts with whom the participants interacted. GST ROUNDTABLE AT JUMPSTART 2017 Following the impact of GST regulation on the print and publishing industry, a GST roundtable discussion was held at JUMPSTART 2017 on 4 August. Tax experts Sujit Ghosh, Partner at Advaita Legal, and Sanjay Garg, Partner- Indirect Tax, KPMG India lead the discussion, moderated by Jaya Bhattacharji Rose, International Publishing Consultant. The speakers talked about the history of printing services and nature of contracts, explaining the difference between goods and services in the light of GST. Q&A about sale of rights, warehousing, transfer of Intellectual Property or product know-how, non-GST inventories and application of different tax slabs led to a deeper understanding of operational knowledge of GST. Though books are non-taxable commodity, the publishers produce a range of products, audio books or e-books to name a few, there is a need to re-evaluate the implications. The panel answered how these taxes are important in streamlining fragmented industry and brining in advocacy to guide production. DAY 2 AT JUMPSTART 2017: PERSPIRATION The second day was about practising all that was learnt through discussions and interactions on Day 1. The four intensive masterclasses, which ran parallel to each other, were all filled with participants from various spheres of children’s learning and content creation. Storytelling Masterclass by Rituparna Ghosh Renaissance of Storytelling: Emote, Engage Educate The mélange of teachers, educators and children’s content creators were familiarised with the elements of storytelling and its impact on children via a thorough discussion with the expert Rituparna Ghosh who also shared certain key storytelling skills through exercises like storyboarding and playacting. Writers’ Masterclass by Venita Coelho The Magic Thinkpot The Writers’ Masterclass saw a dynamic creative and intellectual engagement as expert Venita Coelho busted myths about creativity and pressed on the need for discipline. She took examples of her own process and work to trace a writer’s process. The workshop also focused on understanding elements of a story via multiple exercises. Illustrators’ Masterclass by Moritz Stetter Play the Palette Illustrator Moritz Stetter kicked off the masterclass with a display of his process diaries and final works. He explained his artistic process and answered related queries that arose during the masterclass. The participants were requested to come with an idea or a story that they developed through the technique of storyboarding while receiving continuous feedback from the expert. The Millennials’ Masterclass by V. Anand Authoring Multimedia Content Self-based learning was the primary theme on which V. Anand elaborated his masterclass. Through detailed exercises, focusing on interactivity and engagement, the expert talked about digitising storyboards for learning and gave an introduction to technical know-how for digital content creation Booklog   GBO New Delhi is offering a monthly column* ‘Booklog’ in the Newsletter for the people from the world of books as a space for a variety of perspectives in publishing. Israel Ministry of Tourism IMOT conducted their second roadshow for 2017 in India the plan to enhance the number of India arrivals to the country. Road show shall conducted in six metro cities namely, Mumbai,Delhi,Kolkata,Hyderabad,Bengaluru and Chennai from 21 August to 30 August 2017.

Speaking at the road show conducted at Taj Mansingh hotel New Delhi on Tuesday, Hassan Madah, Director -IMOT briefed  that over 34,000 Indians have already visited Israel in the last seven months  of 2017 marking growth of 36 percent after the historic visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel, set a spark a renewed interst among Indians travel trade and MICE agents.

Israel recorded an exponential growth of 79% Indian arrival in June compared to the same moth last year.

El AL provides direct air connectivity between india and israel and has three in summer and four in the winter weekly flights from Mumbai to Tel Aviv.

Prime Minister of Nepal Sher Bahadur Deuba is arriving in New Delhi today on 5-day visit to India. During the visit, Mr Deuba will call on President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. More from our correspondent:

Prime Minister Deuba’s India visit is being seen as significant in Nepal. Number of articles have been published in most of the newspapers on likely agenda and importance of the visit. In recent years Indo-Nepal friendship has witnessed significant growth as high level exchange between both the countries has gained momentum.

The upcoming visit of Prime Minister Deuba will provide an opportunity to both the sides for holding wide-ranging discussions on the issues of mutual interest. The visit is also expected to add a new chapter in age old special ties between the two countries.

Malegaon blast accused Lt Col Shrikant Prasad Purohit walks out of jail after nine years. Earlier in the day, army vehicles arrived at the Taloja jail ahead of his release. He is likely to join his unit in 24 hours. Army vehicles escort Lt Col Shrikant Prasad Purohit after his release from Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai.

The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to Lt Col Shrikant Prasad Purohit, who has been languishing in jail for almost nine years for his alleged role in 2008 Malegaon blast case, observing there were contradictions in the chargesheets filed by different investigating agencies.

The top court also said it cannot deny the relief to him merely because “sentiments of community was against him”.

Six people were killed in a bomb blast on September 29, 2008, at Malegaon, a communally-sensitive textile town in Nasik district of north Maharashtra.

The army officer was to have walked out of jail yesterday, but his bail procedure could not be completed in time as the required papers did not reach the jail authorities before sunset.

He had said yesterday that he was waiting to return to his two families — the army, and his wife, children and dogs. Rediff

AUGUST 23, 2017LEAVE A COMMENTON 10 BOGIES OF KAIFIYAT EXPRESS DERAIL IN AURAIYA,

Ten bogies of Delhi-bound Kaifiyat Express derailed in Auraiya district of Uttar Pradesh early this morning. No casualty has been reported, so far. Principal Secretary Home, Arvind Kumar said, 74 people have been injured and they have been admitted to nearby hospitals. The bogies derailed following a collision of the train, coming from Azamgarh, with a dumper between Achhalda and Pata railway stations. Relief and rescue operations have been completed and the passengers have been brought to the Achhalda station for their onward journey. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said in a tweet that he is personally monitoring the situation.

Public Relations Officer of the North Central Railway told AIR that the traffic on the Delhi-Howrah route has been disrupted.

The Railways has opened helpline numbers at different stations.
