Government has said regenerating forests will enhance the economic level of the country. Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests, Jayanti Natrajan today said that state governments should draw up better forest management.Inaugurating the four day First Indian Forest Congress in New Delhi ,the minister called for a stronger system to monitor forests and increase their number in the country. She said, it is important to increase the number of forests to achieve the millennium development goals.
Expressing concern over forests degradation in tribal areas of the country she said there is need to strengthen community co-operation from tribals in the country. She said that the Green India Mission to plant trees will surely help to fight forest degradation.
About 400 delegates across India and abroad are participating in this congress which is being held as a key scientific event of India during the ongoing International Year of Forests - 2011. The event provides an opportunity for the forest community and stakeholders to discuss advances in various aspects of forestry.
Planners, scientists, forestry professionals, scholars, representatives from industries, farming community and NGO’s from across the nation will discuss emerging issues in forestry research and development.
