Delivering the keynote address, Dr Jayaprakash Narayan, remarked that 21st century India cannot be run with 19th century politics and governance. He asserted that the best and brightest must be attracted and provided a platform for making genuine change happen. He reasserted his faith in the power of the people of UP and India, that will drive UP and India in the directions of visionary governance. Dr. JP observed that this movement had already taken deep roots in AP and was confident that it will rapidly spread to other states like UP and expressed the hope that the people of UP will demonstrate this in a big way in the 2012 elections. He said that a basket of Administrative, Political, Electoral and Judicial reforms are required over the next few years to drive India towards achieving its potential and Lok Satta will persist in its efforts to achieving the same, through constructive engagement with various stakeholders. Dr JP appealed to the Youth that the time is ripe for the youth of the country to take charge and transform the political culture by shunning the divisive vote bank politics. He further insisted that Lok Satta Party welcomes new age leaders to join in and become direct stakeholders in the future of our country.
Surendra Srivastava, National General Secretary, speaking on the occasion said that “No successful country in the world has been able to deliver good governance without an “internally democratic political party”. The problem in India is the absence of democratic “political parties”. We must try to understand why Barack Obama or David Cameron, who were unknown around five years back, have emerged to lead their countries. Internal party democracy helps bring the best and the brightest talent into politics and empowers the “aam aadmi” in a fair and transparent manner. The need of the hour is to create conditions for nurturing grassroots leadership.
Mr. Srivastava also spoke about the unique Executive Membership model of Lok Satta, where every member is an “agent of change” in his or her capacity and owns, funds and directs the Party. He further elaborated upon the democratic and transparent process of nomination and election of candidates for the party ticket to nurture genuine grass root leaders. He said that the credentials of the potential candidates are scrutinized by an independent election authority. The independent election authority of the Party is headed by Justice B.N Srikrishna, a respected Former Supreme Court Judge. He further clarified that none of the members of the authority are members of the Party to maintain its independence. In the case where more than one executive member wish to contest the same seat, the party uses the secret ballot by all the executive members of that constituency to decide upon the final choice, with the elections supervised by the independent election authority.
Lok Satta Party intends to field atleast 50-60 candidates for UP 2012 elections.
Shri Sandeep Varma, President of the Gautam Budh Nagar District unit of Lok Satta, invited and appealed to capable and committed citizens to support the movement of Lok Satta Party either by joining the party or by becoming its candidates or supporting its candidates. He further remarked that Lok Satta is a genuine Citizen's Party with deep rooted inner party democracy and transparency. He announced that the Party had already constituted an Outreach Team to engage with politically inclined citizen, activists and NGOs to come together on Lok Satta’s political platform. This common political stage will be used to field a strong team of candidates for UP 2012, to fight corruption and to bring in increased levels of accountability and transparency in delivery of public services.
Shri Anoop Khanna said that Lok Satta Party’s election campaign particularly in NOIDA is focused on the demand of formation of “NOIDA Municipal Corporation” which will also include passage of “Model Nagar Raj Bill” in Assembly to create participatory decentralized governance mechanisms that will contain corruption and increase the accountability and transparency in delivery of various civic and other services.
Lok Satta Party’s leaders Alok Singh, Amol Ratna, Shashank Shukla, Ashish Sharma, Milan Gupta, Vinod Sharma and Praneet Sushil were also present at the event.
