PM to meet bankers on Jan 3 to draw blue print on PSB reforms

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold discussions with bankers on the 3rd of January to draw an action plan for reforms in the public sector banks, PSBs. The meeting which will take place in Pune, will discuss the issues like capital requirement, risk profiling, debt recovery and restructuring of the PSBs to improve their efficiency.

The meeting will also focus on what has gone wrong and what should be done both by banks as well as by the Government to improve and consolidate the position of PSBs. Financial Inclusion, Direct Benefit Transfer and Human resources related issues will also be on the agenda. According to the official release, the final objective would be to prepare a blue print of reform action plan. Once adopted, the blue print could then be implemented by the banks as well as by government.

The meeting will be attended by the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Minister of State for Finance, Jayant Sinha, RBI Governor Dr. Raghuram Rajan, Finance Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and other officials.

DBTL becomes world’s largest direct benefit transfer scheme

The ambitious scheme of giving cash subsidy on cooking gas directly to consumers has become the world’s largest direct benefit transfer with 2.5 crore households getting about 550 crore rupees since 15th of last month. The direct benefit transfer on LPG (DBTL), under which cash subsidy is paid to consumers so that they can buy cooking gas at market price. The scheme was rolled out in 54 districts and will be extended all over the country from next year 1st of January.

Talking to reporters in New Delhi yesterday, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan said that in 54 districts 75 per cent of the population is covered by DBTL. He said, the scheme has surpassed number of beneficiaries in direct benefit transfer programmes in China and Brazil. Mr Pradhan said, large number of users joining the scheme and his Ministry has received 3,000 complaints in which 80 per cent have been addressed within 7 days.

UKRAINE TAKES HISTORIC STEP TOWARD NATO

Ukraine took a historic step toward NATO on Wednesday in a parliamentary vote certain to stoke Russia’s anger ahead of talks on ending the ex-Soviet state’s separatist war.

Lawmakers in the government-controlled chamber overwhelmingly adopted a bill dropping Ukraine’s non-aligned status – a classification given to states such as Switzerland which refuse to join military alliances and thus play no part in wars.

President Petro Poroshenko had vowed to put Ukraine under Western military protection after winning an election called in the wake of the February ouster in Kiev of a Moscow-backed president.

“Ukraine’s fight for its independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty has turned into a decisive factor in our relations with the world,” Poroshenko told foreign embassadors in Kiev last night.

Ukraine assumed neutrality under strong Russian pressure in 2010.

It had sought NATO membership in the early post-Soviet era but – its once-mighty army in ruins and riven by corruption – was never viewed as a serious candidate.

Last winter’s revolution in Kiev upset Russian President Vladimir Putin’s plans to enlist Ukraine in a new, Kremlin-led bloc that could rival both NATO and the European Union.

And Moscow had set Kiev’s exclusion from all military blocs as a condition for any deal on ending the pro-Russian uprising that has killed 4,700 in the eastern Ukrainian rustbelt in the past eight months.

Putin’s view of NATO as modern Russia’s biggest threat has only been reinforced by this year’s dramatic spike in East-West tensions over Ukraine.

“In essence, an application for NATO membership will turn Ukraine into a potential military opponent for Russia,” Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev warned in a Facebook post yesterday.

He said that Ukraine’s rejection of neutrality and a new Russian sanctions law that US President Barack Obama signed on Friday “will both have very negative consequences.”

“And our country will have to respond to them,” Medvedev added.

Perhaps the most immediate threat will be to delicate peace talks this week in the Belarussian capital Minsk that Poroshenko announced yesterday.

The last two rounds of Minsk consultations in September produced a truce and the outlines of a broader peace agreement that gave the two separatist regions partial self-rule for three years within a united Ukraine.

But the deals were followed by more fighting that killed at least 1,300 people.

The insurgents’ decision to stage their own leadership polls in violation of the Minsk rules effectively ended political talks between the two sides.

He spent twenty years in the Editions Grasset, discovering authors such as Frédéric Beigbeder, Karine Tuil or Virginie Despentes. He has been the managing director of the Editions Stock since July 2013.

Shabana Azmi unveils ‘IN AND OUT OF THEATRES’ by Dr. Brijeshwar Singh

~ A non-fiction memoir of an Orthopaedic Surgeon-cum-theatre impresario ~

New Delhi, December 24, 2014: Renowned actress and social activist Shabana Azmi launched a new non-fiction book‘In And out of Theatres’ in the capital yesterday written by Dr. Brijeshwar Singh, an esteemed Orthopaedic surgeon-cum-theatre impresario at India International Centre.

A collection of short stories ‘In And out of Theatres’ are memoirs of real people; of pain and suffering; and yet of hope and belief. Dr. Brijeshwar Singh has cleverly ‘weaved in’ two parts of the world together to convey life’s philosophy through his debut book.Born in a small town of Bareilly and graduated from KGMC Lucknow, Dr. Brijeshwar is as passionate about the literary theatre and the performing arts, as he is about the orthopaedics.

While unveiling the book, Shabana Azmi said, “A compelling read and well articulated. His book allows us to get rare insights into the emotional seesaw doctors’ face when dealing with complicated medical cases. Dr Brijeshwar though is a doctor but has a spirit of an artist and his boundless commitment to both the world shines through his debut book.”

Along with Shabana Azmi, the occasion was graced by renowned names like Mr. Tarun Vijay, Member of Parliament and Mr. Santosh Gangwar, Minister of State for Textiles alongwith Dr. P K Dave, Former Director, AIIMS and Mr. Shishir Priyadarshi, Director-WTO, Geneva.

Commenting on his debut book Dr. Brijeshwar Singh said, “I feel humbled to have such esteemed people who have gathered here for unveiling of my first book. I would like to thank all my patients and theatre colleagues, who actually inspired me to pen down my thoughts. I have tried narrating all my stories in the simplest yet effective manner. I hope to receive positive responses from the readers.”

The stories feel connected even as they vary in time, content and the ending. The characters in each story don’t know each other; they come from different life stages and through them Dr. Brijeshwar narrated diverse experiences. But the thread running through them is common and strong – it is of hope, of belief, of strength in diversity, and above all of the power of compassion and good. In some ways it can be said that this is both Dr Brijeshwar’s tribute and gift to his patients.
