TV journalists shot dead in US
UPDATE: 2 TV journalists shot dead in USUpdated on : 27-08-2015 02:29 PM
A woman TV reporter and a cameraman were Wednesday killed on live television when a “disgruntled” ex-employee of the TV station opened fire in the US state of Virginia before succumbing to his injuries from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Alison Parker, 24, a reporter for WDBJ television news channel, and Adam Ward, 27, a cameraman, were interviewing a woman about a shopping plaza in Moneta, a small community near Roanoke city – some 400 kilometres south west of Washington DC — when they were shot by the gunman identified as Vester Lee Flanagan II, 41, of Roanoke.
The gunman is believed to have fired six or seven times, WDBJ General Manager Jeff Marks said.
After the shooting Flanagan fled but was later found by police in his car with gunshot wound.
“Troopers approached the vehicle and found the male driver suffering from a gunshot wound,” police said.
He later died at the Inova Fairfax Hospital after succumbing to the injuries suffered from the self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Flanagan previously worked for WDBJ under the name Bryce Williams. He was hired at the station in the spring of 2012 after working at stations in San Francisco and in Florida, North Carolina, Texas and Georgia.
WDBJ let him go in February 2013, Roanoke Times reported. In May 2014, Flanagan filed suit against the station in Roanoke General District Court, seeking money he felt he was owed and additional damages.
His suit alleged discrimination by the station and named most of the WDBJ staff in his complaint, but in July 2014, the case was dismissed.
Video of the shooting was later posted on the Twitter account and Facebook page of Bryce Williams.
It showed an outstretched arm holding the handgun and firing repeatedly at Parker as she tried to run away.
Part of the incident was caught on video during WDBJ TV’s morning broadcast as the shocking viewers saw the grisly drama on their TVs.
The station was interviewing Vicki Gardner, head of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce. Gardner was shot at his back and is currently battling for his life in a hospital.
Flanagan was believed to be disgruntled with the TV station. According to New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, since 1992 five journalists have been killed in the US.
This year so far at least 39 journalists have been killed worldwide with France, South Sudan and Syria, being the most deadly countries.
“The thoughts and prayers of everybody here at the White House are with the families of those who were injured or killed in that terrible incident,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters at his daily news conference.

Asian stocks gain:
Tokyo shares gave momentum to Asian stock markets higher on Friday after news of US economic growth report buoyed investors following a prolonged rout driven by concerns over China´s economy. The dollar gained and oil prices rose on the back of the US growth report, but concerns over Japanese inflation figures tempered sentiment.Tokyo stocks gained 2.49 percent in early trading, while Hong Kong was up 1.00 percent and Shanghai gained 1.65 percent.
Sydney was also 0.53 percent higher, while Seoul gained 1.38 percent. The gains in Asia followed a second straight day of advances on Wall Street, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average gaining 2.27 percent, the broad-based S&P 500 rising 2.43 percent and the tech-rich Nasdaq adding 2.45 percent.
They were boosted by a US economic growth report that showed the world´s biggest economy expanded at an annual rate of 3.7 percent in the second quarter, sharply higher than the initial appraisal of a 2.3 percent gain.
“Fear for the global economy had been one reason behind the recent falls, so the unexpected strength in the US, the fact that their GDP has managed to grow this much, is positive,” said Nobuyuki Fujimoto, a Tokyo-based senior market analyst at SBI Securities Co.
The gains come as a relief to investors who at one point saw $8 trillion wiped off global markets in a rout led by fears over the outlook for China.Oil prices also extended gains after surging 10 percent in the previous session on the back of the US data.
US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for October delivery gained 83 cents to $43.39 while Brent crude for October rose 45 cents to $48.01.And on currency markets, the dollar was at or near one-week highs against the euro and the yen.
Tokyo trading, the dollar bought 121.14 yen, up from 121.02 in New York and 119.98 on Wednesday.
It was also at $1.1250 against the euro, down from $1.1239 in New York but still stronger than Wednesday´s value of $1.1312.
The euro bought 136.30 yen, against 136.03 yen in US trading.
Gains from upbeat releases in the US were tempered by data in Japan that showed that inflation in the Asian powerhouse fell back to zero in July while household spending dropped for a second straight month.Gold, which is seen as a safe haven in times of stock market turmoil, traded at $1,129.61, up from $1,125.00.
In India the RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan said that despite immense efforts by the government and the apex bank, the stability of Indian economy is still a work in progress. He said, economic growth is still below levels that India is capable of. He said that inflation is still on the higher side and the willingness of banks to cut base rates is muted. The report says that uncertainty in the progress and distribution of monsoon continues to be a risk for both growth as well as the inflation outlook. RBI has said that it is closely monitoring the overall disinflation strategy that requires inflation to be brought down to 5 per cent by January 2017.
Dr. Rajan said RBI will continue to remain focused on bringing down inflation and work with the government and banks to resolve the issue of distressed projects and clean up bank balance sheets so as to support new lending.
RBI Governor has said that the focus is on getting the underlying real projects back on track; while also keeping a check on the progress of current projects.
He said the RBI has created a database of loans of over 50 million and advised banks and NBFCs to report regularly on the status of the loans.
RBI has welcomed the Government’s decision to add to the recapitalisation fund for banks as it will help in cleaning up balance sheets and generating healthy growth.
The RBI report has said that with a surplus expected on trade in services from software exports and travel earnings, the current account deficit for the year as a whole should be contained below 1.5 per cent of GDP.

HridayManch- the annual theatre festival of Sparsh Natya Rang kicks off in the capital today
Fourth edition of the festival promises to be bigger and better
New Delhi, August 27, 2015: HridayManch – the annual theatre festival by Sparsh Natya Rang started at the Sri Ram Centrein the capital today. The festival will go on till August 30, 2015.
In its fourth edition, the festival this year will be showcasing plays with a focus on folk elements and the major attraction of the festival would be the Hindi adaptation of Ibsen’;s “A Doll’;s House”.
“The idea behind the festival is to attract not only regular theatre watchers, but also those who are not avid followers of theatre. And that is why we chose plays which have universal themes. We also try to keep an element of folk every year. We want to encourage the art of theatre that is intrinsic to our country’;s heritage”, saidAjitChowdhury, Director, Sparsh Natya Rang group.

The festival started with ‘Pati Gaye Ree Kathiawar’, written by Sudhir B.Kulkarni and directed by AjitChowdhury(also director of the festival organising group Sparsh Natya Rang).
Pati Gaye Ree Kathiawar is the story of a village called Bhamboda near Pune in Maharashtra. The Subedar of Pune from a long time had been paying his visit to Kathiawar for yearly collection of tax. His wife Janki was a beautiful, devoted, dedicated lady, who loved her husband very much.
After hearing the news that her husband has to go Kathiawar she was in a deep sorrow, so she asked her husband to give her some work to keep herself busy. So SarjayRao asked her to build a palace made of glass and that too without paying any money from his side, in his absence. Although whatever he said was a part of joke, but his wife Janki took it seriously and wanted to fulfill the wishes of her husband. This is the story of the play. The character of Joravar and his Diwanji create some funny moments in his play. A husband-wife relationship is based on faith towards each other, if there is a tittle mistake then the life becomes hell for them, In his context in our male dominating society, it is true that it is always the woman who is asked give the test of life. If a woman commits a mistake she is defined as characterless & if it is done by a man he is spared. This play shows the funny side of the truth behind a man and a woman relationship.

GudiyaGharthe play which would bestaged on day two of HridayManch, is an adaptation of  Henrik Ibsen Doll’s House directed by Basab Bhattacharya of New Delhi Players. One of the finest plays written on the subject of women’s rights & has the distinction of being the most performed play internationally perhaps because it’s as close as one could get to the truth of hypocrisy in accepted gender roles in a marriage, in those times and even today. Even though the writer has mentioned that the play is a description of Humanity and is about Self-discovery.
Nora and TorvaldHelmer believe they are happily married and on the brink of a blissful new phase of life. Torvald has been promoted to bank manager and their money worries are over. But Nora has a secret debt, incurred with good intentions and a forged signature, and with her husband’;s new power comes the threat of blackmail. Over three acts the illusion of bourgeois contentment unravels, and the play culminates in a spectacular scene between the couple as Nora’;s lie is exposed and Torvald first blames, then forgives her – and is finally abandoned as Nora recognizes the truth of her situation. She accuses her husband, and her father before him, of having used her as a doll, and declares herself unfit to be a wife or mother until she has learned to be herself. The ideal wife & mother walk out of the marriage.
Henrik Johan Ibsen, a major Norwegian playwright largely responsible for the rise of modern realistic drama, writer of A Doll’s House was inspired by the belief that “a woman cannot be herself in modern society,” since it is “an exclusively male society, with laws made by men and with prosecutors and judges who assess feminine conduct from a masculine standpoint.
The play is as relevant today as it was in 1879. In the century and more since, the play and the role of Nora have taken on iconic status; UNESCO’;s Memory of the World register calls Nora “a symbol throughout the world, for women fighting for liberation and equality”.

Thethird play scheduled during this edition ofHridayManch is ‘Mayaram Ki Maya’, directed by J.P. Singh, written by-Jay Vardhan, presented by Rangbhoomi.
The theme of the play ‘Mayaram Ki Maya’ is based on a folktale, with human being being its center point. Amongst innumerous living beings it is man only who desires to establish his own entity parallel to that of God. Call it whether curiosity or his wiliness, man sometimes seems to be hallooing the existence of God. His mind is filled with many diverse perversions. This is why man thinks something else, appears to be someone differently contrary to his thought and acts finally in quite a different manner. He forgets serious relations when the occasion arises; forgets the obligations and the reverence of God.

The last play to be staged is ‘Mousaji Jai Hind’, written and directed by VasantKashikar, which is a play based on a story of renowned Hindi writer UdaiPrakash presented by Vivechana.
Mousaji Jai Hind is a portrait of a unique character and the story moves around a person named Mousaji. He is an old man who has woven an imaginary world around him. He has allthe problems of a common poor man but he always talks about his participation in freedom struggle, his friendship with Gandhi Ji, how AngrejSahabs were afraid of him in those days and how the Chief minister and police chief still respects him. People know him and his reality but still love him for his simplicity and honesty. Mousaji entertains and at the same time compels us to think about him and his own world. The play ends up where Mousaji was compelled to accept the reality of life.
