Vietnam curb anti-China protests
Demonstrations are strictly limited in Vietnam under Communist Party rule. But the authorities had given their tacit approval for anti-China rallies, with police controlling traffic when protesters took to the streets. The two nations are increasingly at odds over the Spratly and Paracel Islands in the South China Sea.
Vietnam passed a maritime law in June that declared sovereignty over the islands.China, on the other hand, has upgraded the status of the islands to a city. A Chinese state-run oil company has announced a plan to explore natural resources in disputed areas.
