Over 1,200 people were admitted to hospitals during one month of unrest in Turkey, the Turkish Health Ministry said in a Thursday statement. Most of the injured – 535 people – were admitted to hospitals in Istanbul. The figures cover the protests which took place over a one-month period from May 28. The demonstrations initially began as protests against the refurbishment of Istanbul’s Gezi Park. They quickly turned into anti-regime rallies, however, with citizens expressing their discontent with Prime Minister Erdogan and his party’s “authoritarian” policies.
Thousands go on strike in Brazil
Tens of thousands of workers across Brazil have walked off their jobs in a nationwide strike demanding better working conditions and improved public services. Strikers are partially or completely blocking 17 highways in seven states, demanding better public transit, health and education services, agricultural reform and a reduced work week. 50 missing in Quebec train crash
Everyone missing in the crash of a runaway oil train in Quebec is presumed dead, police said. Officials said Wednesday evening that 20 bodies had been found in the burned-out town, and 30 people were missing. 2,000 tourists evacuated in Taiwan
Taiwan evacuated more than 2,000 tourists on Thursday as the island braced for Super-Typhoon Soulik. The typhoon, packing gusts of up to 227kph, was 960km east of the island’s southernmost tip as of 03:00 GMT, Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau said. Soulik is moving west-northwest towards Taiwan at about 22kph and could narrowly skip or make landfall in the north of the island sometime between late Friday and Saturday morning, AFP reported. Authorities are warning of fierce winds and torrential rains.

The Supreme Court has ruled that a person in jail or in Police custody is not entitled to contest election for legislative bodies. This brings an end to the era of undertrial politicians fighting polls from behind bars.The apex court ruled that only an elector can contest the polls and the elector ceases the right to cast vote due to confinement in prison or being in custody of Police. The court, however, made it clear that disqualification will not be applicable to person subjected to preventive detention under any law.
Referring to the Representation of Peoples’ Act, a bench of Justices A K Patnaik and S J Mukhopadhayay said that the Act (Section 4 & 5) lays down the qualifications for membership of the House of the People and Legislative Assembly and one of the qualifications laid down is that he must be an elector.
The court passed the order on an appeal filed by the Chief Election Commissioner and others challenging a Patna High Court order barring people in Police custody to contest polls.

Prison-riots in Indonesia kill five people and lead to escape of dozens of prisoners
In Indonesia, five people were killed in riots at a prison in Sumatra Island that led to the escape of dozens of inmates. At least two prison staffs are reported to be among the dead. One report said, they died in a building that was set on fire.
The riots broke out at Tanjung Gusta prison in Medan on Thursday, leaving parts of the jail engulfed in flames. Police said the violence was sparked by a power cut that had left inmates without water. Hundreds of security personnel are searching for more than 100 inmates who broke out of the jail. Some of those who escaped have been convicted of terrorism offences. Some of the fugitives are reported to have been recaptured, but it is not clear how many.

Vietnam Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh in New Delhi stated this on Thursday. He was addressing a joint press conference with External Affairs Minster Salman Khurshid after the Joint Commission meeting.
Mr. Minh said Hanoi’s position is that there is need to respect UN Convention on the Law of the Sea to solve the issues in the South China Sea peacefully. Mr. Khurshid said India has indicated that any contentious issue should be settled in a peaceful manner, through dialogue.

With this, about 1.2 lakh people have been affected in nearly 450 villages, official sources said.
According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 27 villages are affected in five districts – Dhemaji, Chirang, Lakhimpur, Jorhat and Sivasagar.
The flood waters have destroyed standing crops like rice in around 6,500 hectares of agricultural land across 11 districts in the state.
As per ASDMA data, nine relief camps have been set up in Dhemaji and Chirang districts and about 3,000 people have taken shelter there.

Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger level at Nematighat in Jorhat district and its tributaries Burhidehing, Desang, Jia Bharali, Puthimari and Beki were flowing above the danger level at Khowang in Dibrugarh district, Nanglamuragat in Sibsagar, N T Road Crossing in Sonitpur, N H Road Crossing in Kamrup and at Road Bridge in Barpeta respectively.
The 11 affected districts are Dhemaji, Tinsukia, Chirang, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Morigaon and Sivasagar.

Ireland’s Parliament has decided landmark legislation to allow abortion in certain cases when the mother’s life is at risk.
Ireland’s coalition party won the motion by 127 to 31 votes, in spite of the massive protests held by anti-abortion groups across the conservative Catholic country, path-breaking legislation comes in the wake of the death of Indian dentist Savita Halappanavar due to Sepsis in an Irish hospital.
Halappanavar died after a miscarriage, days after her requests for an abortion had been denied repeatedly by hospital authorities.
