‘Partition’s two Faces:
Instant and long term’
by
Prof.Partha
S. Ghosh,
NMML.
Abstract:
The Partition of India took place in 1947 (67 years ago). It continues
to evoke scholarly attention to this day. Ever since research has gathered
pace oral history projects have contributed further to the discourse.
There are fresh works not only in English but languages like Bengali. The
speaker will try to enrich and discuss two dimensions of the story with fresh
insight. One relates to the task of rehabilitation, both in India and
Pakistan, and the other to the cultural ramifications of Partition. While
the first was direct, urgent and quantifiable the second was indirect,
long-term and subjective. While the first mainly pertainedto the memories
of the displaced the second has to do with memories of not only the displaced
but also of a lot of their descendants. It also concerned those indirectly
involved with the process. The talk is part of the speaker’son-going project at NMML on “Making Sense of the
Cross-Border Migrations in South Asia”.
