UN and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan has failed to convince Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to end his military crackdown on rebel forces.The former UN secretary general met Assad on Saturday, in the Syrian capital of Damascus.The country's state-run news agency reported that Annan confirmed his commitment to work in a neutral way, and reject any outside intervention in Syrian affairs. Annan also stressed his belief in a peaceful solution.

Assad said Syria is ready to cooperate with any honest effort to find a solution for the events taking place.
However, the President stressed that the continued use of military force is necessary to contain rebel forces.
He described army defectors as terrorists and said that no political dialogue can succeed while terrorist groups are trying to destabilize the country.Annan met with opposition leaders and plans to meet Assad again on Sunday to try and break the deadlock.

Save Dissent to Save Democracy   THE rising instances of physical violence and threats against political opponents and the inability to accept dissent must raise huge concerns amongst all of us who see democracy as perhaps the really stellar achievement since Independence. AAP’s attack on BJP headquarters and acts of arson committed under the very noses of their elite leadership; the attacks on Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia in Gujarat in the last two days; the recent manhandling of the caretaker of journalist Siddharth Varadarajan’s house by some garden variety thugs; and the violence and threats meted out regularly to their political opponents by political parties is surely deplorable and condemnable.
