Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visiting Washington
DC. He will meet US President Barack Obama on Friday to discuss the
Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement and the bilateral alliance.Abe
flew to a US air base in the suburb of the US capital by government chartered
plane on Thursday.In the summit, Abe hopes to gain reassurances from Obama that
universal tariff cuts are not a precondition to join TPP negotiations. Leaders
will reaffirm cooperation in seeking a new UN Security Council resolution
against North Korea over its 3rd nuclear test conducted this month.
The leaders to discuss the proposed relocation of the US Futenma air station in Okinawa, southwestern Japan. Abe plans to tell Obama that he will make consistent efforts to move the base to Nago City in the prefecture in line with an existing bilateral accord.As part of his effort to bolster the bilateral alliance, Abe plans to say he will urge the current Diet session approve the Hague Convention and necessary legislation.The convention is designed to prevent a parent in a failed international marriage from taking a child to his or her home country without the other parent's consent. The US has pushed Japan to endorse the convention.
