Dear All,
Greetings !
You must have read about the decision taken by the Narendra Modi led NDA government to raise the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam. While there are thousands of families in the 177 villages of Madhya Pradesh alone and hundreds of families in the adivasi villages of Maharashtra and Gujarat who are “affected at 122 meters-the present height of the Dam”, the Union and the state government can’t carry further construction at the dam ! This being the legal position and the mandate of ‘No submergence without full rehabilitation of any family’ as well as compliance on environmental conditions, the decision is illegal! It is in violation of the Narmada Tribunal Award and many judgments.
The NDA Government is taking resort to certain decisions by official bodies, but with false claims like “All project-affected are rehabilitated”, “back water levels are changed and hence there will be no additional submergence”, that the “17 meters high gates will be erected but kept open”… etc.  The decision is made without taking cognizance of the massive corruption in rehabilitation, with the enquiry on.…indicating no rehabilitation of thousands.
The villages with pucca houses, shops, schools, temples, mosques…green fields with best of agriculture and horticulture, need to be visited and seen to believe….and to say NO to Submergence without rehabilitation and hence to raising the Dam further when no alternative land and livelihood is offered to thousands of farmers, fish-workers, potters, labourers.
The undemocratic and illegal push to this project is to intimidate those who have struggled for last 29 years for their rights, exposing the untruth and destruction to corruption, illegalities and irregularities. Adivasis without alternative land…fishworkers without right to fisheries ( except in Maharashtra)… farmers cheated with fake registries….will have to face the challenge, but only with your support.
We, therefore, invite you to the Narmada Valley to meet the people, visit the villages and a township.…to assess the reality versus fake claims.
Supporters from across India are earnestly requested to be with us on 23rd- 24th -25th of August. There will also be a mass rally on one day in Badwani, and visit to hilly adivasi community, to be marched by boat….There will also be a meeting to discuss and decide.
Do reach Badwani on 22nd evening onwards or 23rd early morning, via Indore/Khandwa/Dhule/Baroda… and plan to return from Baroda on the 25th night.
It is critical time….an enormous challenge and your support will be the most valuable. Do confirm by a letter, e-mail or phone at the earliest.

Centre’s u-turn on e-rickshaws is a betrayal with poor people

The Central government’s stand before the Delhi High Court on the issue of regularisation and regulation of e-rickshaws in Delhi is a complete u-turn from what it had been publicly stating so far and it has now betrayed the poor people.
It is shocking that the Centre is adopting a casual attitude on a serious issue which affects the livelihood of nearly two lakh poor families in the national capital.
It is beyond any reasonable understanding that when the Parliament session is currently going on and the government still has four complete working days before the session is scheduled to end, why is it not making efforts to get the Motor Vehicles Act amended ?
The government’s law officers told the High Court on Friday that it will take two months to frame guidelines for regulating e-rickshaws in the national capital. This is completely opposite to what the union transport minister Mr Nitin Gadkari had stated at a rally at Ramlila Maidan on June 16.
Mr Gadkari had promised that e-rickshaws below 650 Watt motors will not be treated as motorized vehicles and can ply freely – this was a false promise for which he should apologise to the e-rickshaw drivers for having fooled them.
Mr Gadkari had promised that if the need arose the Centre would even promulgate an ordinance for the regularization of e-rickshaws, but the real situation is that his government is even unable to move an amendment in Parliament.
The Aam Aadmi Party is of the clear view that e-rickshaws must be allowed to ply on Delhi roads with proper regulation and agrees with the High Court that these must have registration numbers and driving licences.
However, the worrying situation is that the incompetence and insensitivity of the central government and Delhi administration should not be used as a tool for snatching the livelihood of poor people for no fault of theirs.
The AAP demands that emergency steps be taken to comply with court orders so that e-rickshaws can be regularized for plying on roads at the earliest.  (ENDS)

Why is the Burmese government so angry with Burma Campaign UK?

Dear friend
Today is the 26th anniversary of the massacre of thousands of people, many of them students, who had been protesting for democracy in Burma.
On 8th August 1988, soldiers opened fire on the protestors, and in the following weeks at least three thousand people are thought to have been killed. There has never been a full investigation into the massacre.
On Monday we asked you to email President Thein Sein, calling on him to publish his full army record, and asking what role he played in crushing the uprising in 1988.
The Burmese government is obviously very upset by the campaign as they have responded by attacking Burma Campaign UK for asking these questions.
In an interview with the Democratic Voice of Burma, Burma’s Information Minister Ye Htut said, “Based on BCUK deliberately spreading this kind of information and claiming it comes from WikiLeaks, you can pretty much judge the level of their dignity and integrity.”
Ye Htut dismissed our request for information by saying Thein Sein was in Kale, not Rangoon in 1988. However, this misses the point. The crackdown took place all over Burma. The question remains as to what role Thein Sein played at this time.
If there is nothing to hide, why won’t they publish his military record?
President Thein Sein has always denied that the Burmese Army has committed any human rights violations. They don’t want to release military records of the President and ministers because they have been involved in human rights abuses which violate international law. Justice and accountability are their greatest fears – that is why they are so angry that people are asking these questions.
Thank you.
Anna
