Tehran has denied reports that supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei wrote to US President Barack Obama in response to an October letter proposing cooperation against the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS). The Foreign Ministry said late on Sunday that there had been no new correspondence, AFP reported. The Wall Street Journal claimed on Friday that Khamenei had sent a secret, but noncommittal letter to Obama in response to his overture.

UN calls for Houthi withdrawal in Yemen

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has demanded that Houthi rebels in Yemen give up control of government institutions and put down arms, according to a resolution unanimously passed at an emergency Sunday meeting. The British- Jordanian draft resolution “demands that all parties in Yemen, cease all armed hostilities against the people and the legitimate authorities of Yemen and relinquish the arms seized from Yemen’s military and security institutions.” It also calls for an end to foreign interference and warns of “further steps” if violence persists. The UN stressed that the situation in Yemen is deteriorating. Shiite militia took control of Yemen’s capital Sanaa in September, and have been seizing other parts of the country since then. Back in November, the UNSC introduced sanctions against Yemen’s former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and two Houthi leaders.
