Chhattisgarh Gang Rape Case: No Action taken by BJP Government so far

Hardly a month after the gruesome gang rape-murder of a college student in the national capital rocked the nation, another similar heart wrenching tale has come to the fore in Akaltara, Chhattisgarh. Ironically, BJP which raised hue and cry against the Congress government over Delhi gang-rape case has done little to give justice to the victim in Chhattisgarh where it is in power. The rapists allegedly belong to influential and powerful families.

The matter came to light when the victim attempted suicide on January 22nd. The note that she wrote before committing suicide reveled the gory tale of her abuse. The rapists who were sexually abusing the victim for over a year had allegedly filmed the act and were threatening to make the clip public if she disclosed the crime.

The victim was admitted to hospital in a very serious condition. The police did not record her statement even after her condition improved. Three days later, without taking her family into confidence, the victim was shifted to Apollo Hospital with the assistance of local police. Friends and family of the rapists continued to visit the victim at the hospital to put pressure on the family members of the victim. Yet no action was taken by Akaltara police. Instead of helping the victim, the BJP government in the state brushed the incident under the carpet due to influence of families of accused.

It was only after proactive intervention by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members, that the statement of the victim was finally recorded by Police. AAP workers have been putting pressure on the authorities by protesting for over a week now.

AAP demands that BJP which had been demanding stern action against the accused in the Delhi gang rape incident, should take corrective measures at the earliest. The victim should be provided better treatment free of cost. The accused should be arrested immediately so that they stop pressurizing the victim’s family. A high level committee should investigate the case independently and the case should be referred to fast track court so that the victim gets justice at the earliest.
