Dear Sir/Madam,

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has been working on the subject of food safety and environmental toxins since the early 1990s. CSE’s Pollution Monitoring Laboratory (PML) has played a key role in building public awareness through its studies on toxins in food and other products.

The laboratory was set up about ten years ago to cater to the unfulfilled need of independent testing lab that provides support to the community. Over the years, the lab has successfully supported CSE’s campaigns on issues such as pesticide residues in bottled water and soft drinks in Delhi and Mumbai; pesticide residues in villagers of Bhatinda and Ropar in Punjab; endosulfan residues in villagers of Kasaragod in Kerala; and soil and water contamination in Bhopal. The lab has also tested antibiotics in honey, caffeine content in energy drinks, transfats in edible oil and fats, nutrition in junk food, phthalate content in toys, and lead in paints. For details, please visit CSE PML Lab

We strongly believe in the need for independent science in promoting health and ecological security of the country. We therefore, wish to discuss the critical issues on food safety, environmental toxins, and body burden to develop and share a perspective on policies, challenges, roadmap and role of independent labs at a wider platform. To do this, we are organising a two-day conference on Food Safety and Environmental Toxins. It will be held at Silver Oak, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi road (New Delhi) on February 20–21, 2013.

We, invite you to attend the conference that would involve sessions on pesticides, junk food and non communicable diseases, community struggle and role of labs, organic farming, antibiotics and growth promoters, body burden and food safety regulations. For more details, please visit Conference Schedule

We do hope you will accept this invitation. It is critical that we build an informed public opinion on the importance of the issues and challenges of food safety and environmental toxins and their relevance to the health of our future generations and us.

Please do let us know if you need any more clarifications. My colleague Avimuktesh (avimuktesh@cseindia.org; +91 9654987003) will coordinate with you.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Yours cordially,

Amit Khurana
