Govt notifies new pattern of Civil Services Examination

The govenment has notified the new pattern of the Civil Services Examiniation conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, UPSC. A gazette notification issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on changes in the test says that the Civil Services (Mains) exams will have a separate paper on ethics, integrity and aptitude. It will include questions to test the candidate’s attitude and approach to issues relating to integrity, probity in public life and their problem solving approach to various issues and conflicts faced by them in dealing with society.
DoPT has also changed the marks distribution of papers and increased number of compulsory subject papers of general studies for the main examination. From this year itself ,in Civil Services (Mains) examination, there will be four compulsory general studies papers of 250 marks each, in addition to two optional papers of 250 marks each. Total marks for the main exams will be 1,800. The paper on essay and English comprehension will continue to be of 300 marks.
Our Correspondent reports that Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had recently approved the changes in the civil services exams. The new pattern is aimed at giving more emphasis on assessing general studies and aptitude skills of aspirants of country’s most prestigious exam. The civil services preliminary examination will be held on May the 26th this year and the last date for filing online applications is 4th of April.
