Russian vessel missing

Russian vessel with 11 crewmembers went missing in the Sea of Okhotsk on Sunday, the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Sea Rescue Coordination Center reported. “The Amurskoye motor ship disappeared three hours ago after sending a distress signal. We are currently searching for the ship but have so far failed to find it,” the rescue center said. “An emergency beacon was activated. Probably, it simply fell over the board. That is why, we can’t yet say that the ship has sunk,” the rescue center said. The emergency beacon sent a signal at 08:15 a.m. Moscow time (05:15 GMT) near the Shantar islands in the southwestern portion of the Sea of Okhotsk. The tanker Novik, which arrived at the scene of the beacon’s distress call, did not discover the vessel, a source in law-enforcement agencies told RIA Novosti. The search and rescue operation is complicated by a severe storm at the scene of a possible shipwreck.
Ukrainians, Head to the Polls 15:43  28/10/2012 KIEV, October 28  Despite the broken promises of the Orange Revolution, rampant corruption and the ever-shifting allegiances that have marked Ukrainian politics in recent years, Ukrainian voters appear resilient and ready to vote in today’s parliamentary elections. The election, in which the ruling Party of Regions will seek to maintain its parliamentary majority amid plummeting support in recent months, represents the first test at the polls for President Viktor Yanukovych and his party. Yanukovych has come under criticism both at home and abroad for his jailing of  former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko , his chief rival, for seven years for negotiating an allegedly unfavorable gas contract with Russia in 2009. Critics, particularly the West and human rights activists, have also slammed what they call his undemocratic consolidation of power, placing family members at top government spots, l...

Wen family refutes NYT reports

Lawyers for Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao’s family have rejected as untrue reports of the family’s “extraordinary hidden riches,” Hong Kong media said on Sunday. The New York Times reported on Friday, citing analysis of corporate and regulatory records, that many relatives of China’s premier, including his mother, wife, son and younger brother, had become extraordinarily wealthy during his leadership, gaining control of assets worth at least $2.7 billion. “In many cases, the names of the relatives have been hidden behind layers of partnerships and investment vehicles involving friends, work colleagues and business partners. Untangling their financial holdings provides an unusually detailed look at how politically connected people have profited from being at the intersection of government and business as state influence and private wealth converge in China’s fast-growing economy,” the paper said. Soon after The New York Times published the story, the paper’s website in Chin...

OCT 28 Frankenstorm winds impacts US Prez poll campaign   MIAMI: Hurricane Sandy lumbered north in the Atlantic Ocean Sunday as Americans on the eastern seaboard scrambled to stock up on supplies and secure homes before the superstorm comes ashore with torrential rains and gale-force winds. The so-called "Frankenstorm" was expected to make landfall somewhere between Virginia and Massachusetts early Tuesday, possibly causing chaos during the frenzied last days of campaigning before the November 6 US presidential vote. As it churned in a northeasterly direction, the massive weather system was at category one hurricane strength, with maximum sustained winds of 75 miles (120 kilometers) per hour, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. The center said that while little change in strength was anticipated for Sandy over the next couple of days, it was "expected to remain a large and powerful cyclone." Forecasters at the National Weather Service warned ...
Myanmar muslims seek shelters   PAUKTAW: The boats loads of Muslims struggled to reach refugee camps and sought safety on islands and in coastal villages on Saturday as Myanmar tried to put out the fires of a week of sectarian unrest that has shaken its fragile democratic transition. Several rickety wooden vessels packed with the stateless Rohingya Muslims who fled clashes with Buddhists in western Rakhine state had reached land by Saturday after two days at sea, but nine boats were still unaccounted for, according to several Rohingya refugee sources reached by telephone. International Human Rights Watch called on Myanmar's reformist government to protect Muslims from "vicious" attacks, and released satellite images of the "near total destruction" of a once-thriving coastal community reduced to ashes around Kyaukpyu, an industrial zone important to Chinese energy interests. The United Nations has warned that Myanmar's fledgling democracy could...
Naresh -- The secret's out: You can join the President in Chicago on Election Night (and have a front row ticket to history). Flights and hotel are on us -- you don't want to miss this final contest. Chip in $5 or whatever you can and you'll be automatically entered: https://donate.barackobama.com/Election-Night Good luck! Obama for America
Naresh -- I first met Barack Obama in 1992. Back before he was a state senator, a candidate, the President of the United States, a husband or a father, he was a 30-year-old guy running voter registration drives in Chicago. He made an impression on me -- and when, in 2007, he decided to run for president, I signed up without hesitation. I thought, if I could help Barack Obama get to the White House, I would have accomplished something great in my life. It's been a long and amazing journey, and our small team of a few became a movement of millions. Now, we're in the final days of his last campaign, fighting to keep Barack Obama in the White House -- and there's not much time left to step up. We're planning his last Election Night -- and he wants you to be there. Be a part of this. Donate $5 or whatever you can today, and you'll be automatically entered to meet President Obama and be right up front at his Election Night speech. I don't kno...
Naresh -- This afternoon, I'm casting my ballot in my hometown of Chicago. I'm told I'll be the first sitting president to take advantage of early voting. And I can't wait. I know I can count on your vote. Now, it's on all of us to make sure our friends and family step up. Reach out to folks you know in important early vote states. Look, this race is extremely tight. It's going to come down to which side can more effectively turn out the vote in these final days, and early vote is a huge part of that. Whether people get out to vote this year, in this election, is even more critical than the last time around. So this is serious, and I'm going to need your help if we want to win. Connect with your friends and urge them to vote early: http://my.barackobama.com/Help-Your-Friends-Vote-Early Thanks, Barack P.S. -- Not on Facebook? Don't let that stop you from getting the word out. Ask your friends and family to get the information ...
