New Delhi, September 22, 2014: Aiming to identify Olympics medal winners in Athletics, GAIL (India) Limited today launched the first edition of India’s most ambitious sports talent hunt, “GAIL:The Fastest Indian”, in association with Spoment.
Legendary athlete ‘Padmashree’ Milkha Singh, himself, is the mentor of the talent hunt, which will identify, groom and develop champions keeping in mind 2020 Tokyo Olympics and herald a new era in the Indian Athletics.
The talent hunt is aimed at finding next Milkha of India and will be conducted across 19 cities reaching over 3,000 schools in the age group of 12 to 14 years. The event is spread into finding best talents in 100 metre, 200 metre and 400 metre race for both, boys and girls.

Winners of the finals of “GAIL:The Fastest Indian” would be trained by renowned national and international sports trainers, where they would get specialized training needed to compete at the international events. The winners will also be given complete scholarship up till their post-graduation so that their focus would continue to remain on medal winning and not have to ne worry about the future.
Speaking on the occasion, ‘The Flying Sikh’ Shri Milkha Singh said, “I am very happy that GAIL and Spoment have taken this initiative. This project is the need of the hour. It will help find many more Milkha’s from the length and breadth of this country.”
GAIL’s Director (HR) Shri M. Ravindran said, “GAIL is a brand associated with energy, youthfulness and growth. The company’s lean and nimble workforce has worked hard to make it the country’s fastest growing Maharatna company in 30 short years. Association with the search for the fastest Indian thus comes naturally for GAIL. Athletics as a sport is a true test of human endurance, redefining the limits we set on ourselves. We are sure that a country of a billion plus has a lot of extraordinary talent that is untapped. What is required is a little help and little faith. We hope to be that help.”
According to Shri Darshan M, Director, Spoment, “GAIL-The Fastest Indian is much more than a talent hunt, it’s a dream for Indian sports. It is an ambitious attempt to discover, groom and develop an Indian Olympic level athlete. The project would achieve its goal even if few of the kids from this search go on to represent India at the international sports arena.”

One dead as Tropical storm Fung-Wong lashes Taiwan
22092014
Sep 22,
Tropical storm Fung-Wong yesterday pounded Taiwan with torrential downpours and powerful winds, killing one person and forcing the cancellation of dozens of flights and ferry services.
Fung-Wong scraped the southern tip of the island after it veered east away from its forecast route, the Central Weather Bureau said.
The storm brought torrential rains and strong winds which whipped high waves off the south coast, forcing thousands of tourists and surfers to leave the popular Kenting area.
Packing winds of 90 kilometers per hour, Fung-Wong had dumped up to 60 centimeters of rain as it tracked north-northeast, the bureau said.
It was the second storm to hit the island this year, following Typhoon Matmo in July.

Syrian refugee crossing into Turkey hit one lakh: UN
22092014
Sep 22,
ISIS militants tightened their noose on a northern Syrian border town yesterday as the United Nations said the number of Syrian Kurds fleeing into neighboring Turkey may have topped one lakh and is likely to go much higher.
Residents fleeing the frontier town of Ayn al-Arab, known in Kurdish as Kobani, and its surrounding villages said the militants were executing people of all ages in the areas they had seized to create a climate of fear and slavish obedience.
Turkish security forces also temporarily closed entry points and used water cannons and fired teargas to disperse protesters gathering Sunday on the Turkish side.
The United States has carried out airstrikes against ISIS militants in Iraq and has said it is prepared to extend them into Syria, but it is not clear when or where this could take place.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power said yesterday that other countries were willing to join Washington in launching air strikes in Syria against ISIS militants.

Mars Orbiter Mission successful : ISRO
22092014
Sep 22,
The crucial test of India’s Mars Orbiter Mission is successful as the main liquid engine on Mars Orbiter spacecraft was fired successfully today. Reports from the Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO, they had a perfect burn for 4 seconds, as programmed and the Orbiter’s trajectory has been corrected. The Mars Orbiter Mission will now go ahead with its plan for Mars Orbit Insertion on Wednesday.
Cruising towards its historic rendezvous with the red planet, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) entered the Mars Gravitational Sphere of Influence on Monday ahead of its scheduled Orbit Insertion on September 24.
Cruising towards its historic rendezvous with the red planet, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) entered the Mars Gravitational Sphere of Influence on Monday ahead of its scheduled Orbit Insertion on September 24.
“Our navigators’ calculations show that MOM has entered the Gravitational Sphere of Influence of Mars,” ISRO said on its social networking site, adding, the spacecraft was within 5.4 lakh km radius of the Mars’ Gravitational Sphere of Influence.
After being launched from ISRO’s spaceport of Sriharikota on November 5 last year, the MOM had left Earth’s orbit on December 1 and began its historic voyage to put India on the list of elite nations, which has sent a mission to Mars.
“MOM has entered the Mars Gravitational Sphere of Influence this morning and we will perform certain procedures on the mission today. The fourth trajectory correction manoeuvre and test firing of Main Liquid Engine will be test fired for 3.968 seconds,” an ISRO official told to media.
Now that the spacecraft has entered the Mars’ influence, its velocity has to be controlled so that it does not escape the Mars’ influence, ISRO official said, adding, the spacecraft is scheduled to enter the Mars Orbit Insertion at 7.30 AM IST on September 24.
The crucial fourth trajectory correction manoeuvre and test fire of the main liquid engine on the spacecraft is scheduled for 2.30 PM Monday.
The test was conducted as the motor had not been used for nearly 10 months after the initial orbit raising maneuvers and trans-planet movement. The motor will now be fired for nearly 24 minutes on Wednesday morning and the spacecraft will be inserted into the intended orbit having a diameter of 423 kms by 80,000 kms around Mars. The five instruments on the satellite will study the Martian surface with special focus on finding the presence of methane in the red planet.
Meanwhile Prime Minister will witness the historic event of inserting Mars orbiter spacecraft into the Martian orbit on Wednesday morning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reaching Bangalore tomorrow on a two visit. If successful, India will become the first country in the world to insert a spacecraft around Mars in the first attempt. Mr. Modi will also inaugurate 110 acre food park near Tumkur which is around 100 Kms from Bangalore. This is his first visit to Bangalore after assuming office. The Karnataka BJP has organized a felicitation programme in his honour tomorrow.
