Ukraine seeks strengthen ties with the European Union
13092014
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko says he is seeking the prompt ratification of an agreement that would strengthen ties with the European Union. Poroshenko met with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in Kiev on Friday.
He said he will submit the agreement to parliament on Tuesday. The document covers trade liberalization and other issues. Russia, which has traditionally had strong economic ties with Ukraine, expressed caution over the agreement. It says the pact would allow products from the EU to enter Russia almost tariff-free through Ukraine.
Representatives of Ukraine, the EU and Russia met in Belgium on Friday to discuss the issue. They agreed to delay Ukraine’s transition to freer trade with the EU until December 2015, even if it ratifies the agreement.

Stakeholders pledge support to collaborate to make the Taj Mahal smile at RISE Summit
- A national movement launched to bring together individuals, organizations, celebrities and media, to ensure that millions of Indians are equipped to make informed choices about health
New Delhi, 12th August 2014: With less than 500 hundred days to go to the final Millennium Development Goal (MDG) deadline and a long way for India to go towards meeting MDG 4 & 5 goals, Improving Healthy Behaviors Program (IHBP), a project funded by United State agency for International Development and led by FHI 360 and knowledge partners Idobro today launched ‘The Taj Must Smile’ movement during the RISE 2014 – Responsible Impact Summit and Expo. Improving Healthy Behaviours Program (IHBP) is a project incepted to encourage healthy behaviours through strategic and evidence-based social and behaviour change communication (SBCC). The Taj Must Smile is a national movement aimed at bringing together multiple stakeholders on a single platform to contribute in improving the health of women and children in India through behavior change.
The Taj Must Smile movement is a multi-stakeholder activation campaign involving corporates, civil society, influencers, academia, key opinion leaders, celebrities and media, all coming together to make every Indian aware of preventive health behaviours, which can lead to healthier mothers, healthier children, and a healthier nation. The campaign aims to touch the lives of every Indian through the Taj Mahal which is the pride of India and most recognizable symbol of India’s grandeur.
Taj Mahal, a symbol of eternal love of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, was built when the empress died, but it also has a graver symbolism. Mumtaz Mahal died in the year 1831 while giving birth to their child due to lack of healthcare advances and information. Today, 400 years later, the Taj Mahal reminds us of the 71,000 mothers and the 1.2 million [1] children under the age of 5 who die every year due to easily preventable birth related complications. Although healthcare facilities in our country have improved by leaps and bounds, the Taj is also a symbol of grief and the only way to make the Taj Smile is to reach out to people with health messages that can inspire healthy behaviours that in turn can help avoid preventable maternal and infant deaths.
Commenting at the event Mr. Sanjeev Vyas, Senior Advisor, IHBP/FHI 360 said, “The Taj Must Smile is a movement of like-minded organizations who are working together towards reducing maternal and infant mortality rate in India through multiple stakeholders and partner engagements. We are happy that corporates, NGOs or for-profit social ventures, media and celebrities have come together to raise awareness to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in India.”
“We are encouraged by the support the campaign has received from various organizations and celebrities who are working towards making the Taj smile in their own different ways. We have devised an online mechanism where each contributor can register and submit the smiles they have collected where each smile will represent one person that has been out to with healthy behaviour messages”, he added. Idobro, the organizers of RISE2014 are knowledge partners for the campaign.
“We are elated to be associated with ‘The Taj Must Smile’ movement and are optimistic that the campaign would receive the support it deserves. It would be a matter of pride for every Indian to be able to contribute to the campaign in some way or the other”, said Ms. Karon Shaiva, Managing Director and Chief Impact Officer at Idobro.
The campaign is supported by corporate foundations such like Ambuja Cement Foundation, Bharti Foundation, IL&FS, JSPL Foundation, Jubilant Bhartia Foundation, RPG Enterprises; Pharmaceutical companies such as Bafna Pharmaceuticals; NGOs like Janani and technology for development companies like Gram Vaani Community Media, Dimagi Software Innovations & ZMQ Development. The campaign is also receiving support from multiple celebrities including Bollywood actors, singers and sports and TV stars.

Putin slams sanctions
13092014
Russian President Vladimir Putin has harshly criticized fresh sanctions imposed by the European Union and the United States over the situation in Ukraine. Putin, visiting the former Soviet republic of Tajikistan on Friday, told reporters the sanctions had been imposed when the situation in Ukraine was moving towards a peaceful resolution. He said the possibility of a political resolution had existed. He claimed the sanctions are aimed at disrupting the peace process.
The European Union and the United States imposed additional sanctions against Russia’s biggest firms on Friday. They barred government-affiliated oil companies from raising capital on their markets.
Putin said Ukraine is being used as a tool for the US strategy of reviving NATO and strengthening its solidarity with satellite countries. He said Western nations are not trying to serve the interests of Ukraine.
Putin also said he is ready to take retaliatory measures. He said his government is looking only at actions that will not harm Russia’s economic interests.United States has announced more sanctions against Russia to pressure the country to observe a truce in Ukraine. US officials on Friday revealed plans to target Russia’s security, financing and energy sectors on the grounds that Moscow continues to destabilize eastern Ukraine.
The US will restrict access to US markets by major Russian arms maker Rostec. It appears set to freeze the assets of 5 defense-related enterprises.
Washington had barred Russia’s largest bank Sberbank from receiving US equity financing. It will also ban exports of technology and equipment for the production of crude oil by 5 Russian oil firms, including Gazprom in Arctic offshore and shale projects.
Tension remains high in Ukraine after the government and pro-Russian separatists agreed to a truce last week. However, sporadic fighting has continued in some areas.

The EU and the US on Friday announced additional sanctions to pressure Russia to cooperate with a fully-binding truce.
US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew released a statement that said the new sanctions will not be imposed if Russia acts to help resolve the conflict.
But he warned that should Russia choose to continue violating international law, the costs for doing so will continue to rise. White House spokesperson Josh Earnest said the Russian economy will surely pay a price after the United States further expanded its sanctions.
Earnest told reporters on Friday that the US and its allies are ready to lift some of the sanctions if Russia abides by a truce reached between Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists.

ASEM finance ministers’ meeting ends
13092014
Finance ministers from the member nations of the Asia-Europe Meeting have agreed on the need to steadily implement sound policies to achieve economic recovery in Europe. The agreement was reached at the ASEM finance ministers’ meeting in Milan, Italy, on Friday.
Delegates from 49 countries issued a statement following their discussions on the recent economic and financial developments in Europe and Asia.
The statement says with global growth remaining fragile and fraught with downside risks, economic recovery in Europe is likely to remain weak in the second half of the year.
It says steady progress in the implementation of sound economic policies is crucial for creating the conditions that lead to stronger growth.
The statement also calls for continued oversight of risks in financial markets, apparently targeting China’s shadow banking and the US Federal Reserve Board’s plan to scale back quantitative easing measures.
Japan was represented by Finance Minister Taro Aso. He reportedly explained the Japanese government’s policy to implement its growth strategies to promote overseas investment by Japanese firms and contribute to the Asian and European economies. Media agencies
