Mount Ontake started erupting shortly before noon on September 27th. The Meteorological Agency says it currently cannot confirm smoke from craters due to clouds near the summit. But it adds volcanic activity is continuing as minor tremors are being detected.The agency warns that the activity could intensify. It is calling on people within 4 kilometers of the craters to be on the alert for falling rocks and a flow of hot gas and ash.
The agency observed volumes of volcanic gas at the foot of the mountain. It recorded emissions of 500 to 1,500 tons of sulfur dioxide a day until Wednesday.

Turkish parliament on Thursday passed a motion to authorize cross-border military actions in neighboring Syria and Iraq to fight terrorist groups.
Of the 396 parliament deputies who voted at Thursday’s session, some 298 voted for the motion while the rest 98 against.
The decision will grant the government a one-year mandate to send Turkish Armed Forces, “if necessary,” “to foreign countries for cross-border operations and interventions and to position foreign militaries in Turkey for the same purposes.”
“The terrorist elements of the outlawed Kurdish Workers’ Party still exist in northern Iraq. On the other hand, the significant increase in the number of other terrorist elements in Syria and the threat posed by them in Iraq is also alarming,” according to the motion, which specifically cited “increasing security risks over use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime.”
The motion also cited as its impetus the growing security risks against the tomb of Suleyman Sah, as the Islamic State (IS) militants are reportedly advancing toward the burial place of the grandfather of the Osman l, founder of the Ottoman Empire.
The tomb in Syria is the only Turkish territory outside the borders of the country, which is guarded some 40 Turkish soldiers. Ankara has previously warned that any attack against the tomb will be retaliated accordingly.
The Turkish parliament earlier authorized the government to launch cross-border operations in Iraq and Syria, but it did not include deployment of foreign troops on Turkish territory.

Protesters in Hong Kong finally accepted an offer of talks with the government after a week of unrest.
Chief Executive CY Leung Leung offered the talks with his deputy late on Thursday but rejected calls to resign.The protesters, angry at China’s plan to vet election candidates, have been occupying parts of the city since the weekend, though numbers have fallen.Beijing has thrown its full support behind Mr Leung, calling the protests illegal and “doomed to fail”.BBC report.
Hong Kong’s political leaders say they are ready to hold talks with pro-democracy protesters. But hundreds of students are continuing their sit-ins near government buildings, making it uncertain whether the standoff will be resolved any time soon.
Embattled Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying refused to resign on Thursday night, but expressed a willingness to send second-ranked Chief Secretary Carrie Lam and 2 other senior officials to speak with the student leaders.
The number of protesters massed in the central district sharply declined on Friday morning. But a few hundred students still remained in front of Leung’s office.
They shouted calls for Leung to resign as police officers stood guard.
The illegal gatherings of the Occupy Central movement are aimed at challenging both China’s supreme power organ and Hong Kong citizens’ democratic rights, and are doomed to fail, according to a commentary to be carried by Friday’s People’s Daily.
For several days, some people have been staging protests in Hong Kong in the name of seeking the so-called “real universal suffrage.”
They attempt to force the central authorities to change the decision made by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), China’s top legislature, on Hong Kong’s electoral system. Such actions blatantly violate the Basic Law of Hong Kong and the principle of rule of law, according to the opinion piece.
“There is no room to make concessions on issues of important principles,” says the commentary on the flagship newspaper of the Communist Party of China.
The decision made on Aug. 31 granted universal suffrage in the selection of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR)’s chief executive on the basis of nomination by a “broadly representative” committee.
The decision possesses unchallengeable legal status and authority. It is “a certain choice and the only choice” to safeguard the decision, according to the commentary.
The NPC decision is in line with the “one country, two systems” policy and the Basic Law. It has fully heeded opinions from all walks of life in Hong Kong, it says.
The core purpose of instigators of illegal activities is to ensure that their representatives, including those in defiance of the central authorities, can become candidates of HKSAR’s chief executives, the commentary says. “Such a demand is neither illegal nor reasonable.”
As one of China’s local administrative regions, Hong Kong is directly under the jurisdiction of the central government rather than a state or an independent political entity, the commentary says.

Islamist militants in Philippines threaten to behead 1 of 2 Germans on Oct. 17
Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist militants in the Philippines have threatened to kill one of two German captives on October 17, Reuters reported. Abu Sayyaf rebels captured the two Germans sailing on a yacht from the western island of Palawan island to the eastern Malaysian state of Sabah in April. The militants are demanding a $5.6 million ransom and for Germany to stop supporting US-led airstrikes against Islamic State militants in Syria. The Germans are reportedly being held in the jungles of Jolo, a remote southern island. Germany has ruled out taking part in the airstrikes, but agreed to arm Kurdish fighters battling IS militants in Iraq.
36 Libyan troops killed in bomb attacks, fighting in Benghazi
At least 36 Libyan soldiers were killed in three suicide bombings and clashes with Islamists in the eastern city of Benghazi on Thursday, the Libyan army said, as cited by AFP. The new toll – a dramatic increase from the previously reported seven deaths – also says that more than 70 were wounded. While several troops died from the blasts of three car bombs that drove into an army checkpoint near Benghazi airport, the majority perished in fighting in the same area. Ebola patient to be treated in Germany

Sandy Hook Elementary School evacuated after threat
Sandy Hook Elementary — the site of a horrific school shooting that claimed the lives of 20 children in late 2012 — was evacuated on Wednesday this week after an apparent threat. The Associated Press reported on Wednesday afternoon that students at the Connecticut school were being moved to a nearby facility so that parents could pick them up after some sort of threat surfaced. The AP could not immediately verify what kind of threat prompted the response.

US, India sign 2 deals on Earth exploration
The US and India have signed two agreements to allow NASA and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to roll out a joint satellite mission to explore Earth’s surface, RIA Novosti said. The deals make it possible for two states to pursue such goals as the identification and implementation of scientific, programmatic and technological goals. They are also expected to establish a pathway to explore Mars in the future. Many celebrities expressed their outrage over the nude photos leaks.
The celebrities nude photos were leaked, include Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna and Kim Kardashian, are now threatening to go to court against Google, suing the company for $100 million.
Lawyers representing the women claim Google should have been able to remove the pictures from the internet, and in failing to do so “made millions from the victimization of women,” the New York Post’s Page Six reported.
Letter to the Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin seen by Page Six was penned by famous Hollywood lawyer Marty Singer, accusing Google of “blatantly unethical behavior.”
“Because the victims are celebrities with valuable publicity rights you do nothing – nothing but collect millions of dollars in advertising revenue – as you seek to capitalize on this scandal rather than quash it,” the letter allegedly stated.
The letter appeared after nude pictures of celebrities reportedly obtained from their iClouds were still available online.
The latest leaks include Rihanna, two of her topless images appearing online via 4chan and Reddit on Sunday; and Amber Heard with over 50 images, one of them featuring a message allegedly for her fiancé Johnny Depp, media outlet TMZ reported.
On September 20, a wave of leaks emerged, with nude photos of Kim Kardashian, Kelly Couco, Kate Bosworth and others released.
Three weeks before that, Jennifer Lawrence and 100 other stars’ photos were leaked. Lawrence’s publicist said that the act was “a flagrant violation of privacy.”
Cameron Diaz pointed out while promoting her film ‘Sex Tape’, “Whoever has done it, they will be caught and made examples of. This can happen to anyone. If these guys can do it to this group of people then everyone’s vulnerable to it.”
“I think that people really need to look at… how would they feel if it happened to them?” she added.
Apple denied that the iCloud system was compromised by hackers, saying this was “a very targeted attack on user names, passwords and security questions.”

The school was established in 1948 and is a co-educational primary school. Shri Pradhan also administered the cleanliness oath to 150 school children and about 500 members of the public.
Lack of hygienic sanitation facilities in schools has been a major cause of embarrassment for the girl students. As a consequence, they leave school on average at an earlier age than their male contemporaries. Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji has set a target of providing separate toilets for girls by August 15 next year. GAIL supported Girls Toilet Work programme will help in covering the long felt gap in hygiene infrastructure in schools as well as contribute to the Swachcha Bharat Abhiyan in its own way.
GAIL Chairman and Managing Director Shri B C Tripathi initiated the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by launching the renovation work of toilets at the Government School of Pahaj village near the GAIL Gas Processing Plant at Gandhar in Gujarat.
The GAIL supported Girls Toilet work is being undertaken under the company’s corporate social responsibility programmes, entailing an expenditure of Rs 27 crore. With today’s launch, the construction work has been kicked off at four districts – Khordha (243 toilets) and Nayagarh (132) districts of Odisha, East Godavari (336) in Andhra Pradesh and Jhabua (310) in Madhya Pradesh. In total, 1,021 toilets will be constructed across India.
Commenting on the initiative, Shri Tripathi said, “GAIL (India) Limited is committed to improve the hygienic sanitation facilities for girls at schools as a responsible corporate citizen of the country. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan will leave a positive impact on public health in the long run. Accordingly, we have undertaken the drive to construct 1,021 toilets across India. Separate toilet facilities for girls in schools would also help in bringing down the dropout rates drastically and will eventually lead to increasing the female literacy rate.”
Shri Tripathi announced that in addition to the renovation of the toilets in the school in Pahaj village of Bharuch district of Gujarat, GAIL would provide computer laboratory and equipment to the school. The company would also provide support for the school’s augmentation to high-school level.
He said GAIL would support sustainable development of water, sanitation and garbage disposal facilities in Pahaj village on a sustainable basis by promoting infrastructure and encouraging community involvement for their operations.
To realise the dream of the Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi and mark the launch of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on his birth day, the entire GAIL community has pledged to keep their surroundings neat and clean. This includes the office promises as well as the residential complexes and related areas. Several programmes like walkathons, cleaning drives, etc. were also organized at all installations of GAIL to mark the event.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) volunteers across the country actively participated in the cleanliness drive with safai karamcharis on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti (Thursday).
The AAP volunteers were led by party’s national convenor and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, who took up the cleaning of a choked drain at BR Camp in New Delhi, early in the day.
After cleaning the drain with workers, Kejriwal had breakfast with the safai karamcharis and families of the area.
Party leaders, former minister and AAP MLAs across the national capital participated in the cleanliness drive with safai karamcharis and had food with them. (The links of photographs of the cleanliness drive are given below along with this press release. These have been taken by AAP volunteers and the media is free to use any of these photographs, along with those posted on the party’s official twitter handle @aamaadmiparty). The AAP, which had chosen the broom as its symbol to cleanse the deep rooted prejudices in the society and to root out corruption, will continue with this campaign.
The next part of the campaign will be the monitoring of the cleanliness campaign started today.
The AAP is of the clear view that a clean India will only be possible if the concerned authorities are ready to go beyond symbolism.
The AAP will continue its emphasis on improving the plight of safai karamcharis, who seem to have been forgotten in the entire exercise.
It is important to give them respect and improve their living conditions, give them permanent jobs and enhanced salaries, in case the country is serious about the cleanliness drive.
In the next phase, the AAP will soon announce its plan of effectively monitoring the cleanliness drive and how the concerned civic agencies can be made accountable for performing their primary duty.

Eagleton – The Golf Resort, Bangalore, October 2, 2014: Delhi’s Rashid Khan posted the tournament’s best score, a seven-under-65, to take a two-shot lead on day three of the PGTI Eagleburg Masters 2014, the fourth Super Series event of the season. Rashid ended the penultimate round with a 16-under-200 total. C Muniyappa of Bangalore shot a 66 to be placed second at 14-under-202.
Rashid Khan (68-67-65), the overnight joint leader, maintained his position at the top of the heap with a sizzling 65 on Thursday. The Super Series Points leader tapped-in for birdie on the fifth before picking up strokes on the two par-5s, the seventh and 10th. Rashid, a four-time winner on the PGTI, helped himself to two more birdies on the 12thand 14th before a spectacular eagle-two on the 17th where he drove the green.
Rashid, a winner on the Asian Tour in 2014, said, “It was an error-free round. I had a decent front-nine but really turned on the heat on the back-nine where I shot a five-under. I landed my tee shot just five feet from the flag on the 17th to set up the eagle that helped me close the day on a high. I hardly missed a green today and struck it really well. Muniyappa will be a tough competitor in the final round as he is from Bangalore and knows the course conditions well. He has also won at this venue. I’ll look to repeat today’s effort in the final round and try to keep the errors out.”
C Muniyappa (69-67-66) gained one place from his overnight tied third position to emerge as the main challenger to Rashid ahead of the final round. Muniyappa, the 2009 Indian Open champion, had a promising first-nine with birdies on the seventh and ninth. He added two more birdies on the 10th and 15th before sinking a mammoth 35-footer for eagle on the 17th.
“I have good memories of this course as I won my only PGTI event here in 2008. I play a lot at this course so I know where to place the ball and that gives me confidence going into the final round. I’m eager for a win as I lifted my last title five years back. I’ve struggled with injuries in recent years and now feel I’m back at the top of my game,” said Muniyappa.
Ajeetesh Sandhu (66-70-69) of Chandigarh shot a 69 on Thursday for a three-day total of 11-under-205. He made a 30-footer for eagle on the seventh and had four birdies and three bogeys.
Local favourite Chikkarangappa, the overnight joint leader, came up with a 72 to slip three places to tied fourth at nine-under-207. He was joined by another Bangalorean Khalin Joshi (68) in tied fourth place.
Chandigarh’s Harendra Gupta and Manish Goyal of the DLF Golf & Country Club shot scores of 70 to share fourth place along with Chikka and Khalin.
