The complete mockery of law by convicted former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala as constitutional authorities and the judiciary watch helplessly, is an extremely dangerous development for the country’s democracy.
The way Mr Chautala, has been flouting the conditions on which he was granted interim bail by the Delhi High Court, exposes the inadequacies of the country’s legal system in dealing with the rich and the powerful.
What can be more shameful than a leader who was convicted on corruption charges and should have been serving his sentence in jail, is out following a medical report by a private hospital and is now campaigning for his party.
Chautala episode raises a few very serious questions :
1) Why has the CBI allowed Mr Chautala to stay out of jail till the voting is over in Haryana, despite it being clear on September 25 that he was flouting the bail conditions and taking part in political activities ?
2) Why is the Election Commission silent on the entire issue particularly when the administrative machinery of a state works under its supervision during elections ?
3) Have all facts been placed before the Delhi High Court on Chautala bail issue ?
4) Why is the state administration silent on the entire issue ?
5) Has the CBI been directed by the central government to go slow on the issue keeping in mind possible post-poll equations ?
Mr Chautala who already has many dubious distinctions attached to his name, already seems set to be making yet another controversial history by perhaps becoming the first political leader to claim the chief minister’s chair despite not even being eligible to contest elections.
The Aam Aadmi Party demands the immediate intervention of the Election Commission to ensure that the peak election campaign season is not vitiated by elements who are known for their criminal and corrupt antecedents. (ENDS)
