Uttarakhand is riding on motorsport to take tourism in the state into top
gear.
For the second consecutive year, Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board is
co-organizing the Uttarakhand Adventure Car Rally. With the rally, the
mountain state has brought motorsport firmly back on its tourism calendar.
The Second Uttarakhand Adventure Car Rally will run from February 1 to
February 4.
Uttarakhand relies on tourism as its economic mainstay, and the focus of
the rally is on getting tourists back to its green vales after the
devastating floods in June 2013. Secretary Tourism Mr Uma Kant Panwar said
motorsport is a valuable addition to Uttarakhand’s adventure portfolio,
targeted at mid and high-end tourists.
“The rally, which is organized on international standards, showcases to
the world that the roads in the state are great. The rally will pass by
some of our most loved tourism hotspots like the world-class ski resort at
Auli, and Ramnagar, which flanks the Jim Corbett National Wildflife
Park,” said Mr Panwar.
The Uttarakhand Adventure Car Rally will have 35 teams driving cars and
SUVs, going across about 1,000 kilometers in the state. Each team will
comprise a driver and a navigator.
In order to ensure that there are no traffic disruptions, Uttarakhand
Adventure Car Rally will follow the Time- Speed-Distance (TSD) format. This
is the sober form of motorsport that allows competitors to go slow in
thickly populated areas, and stick to specified speed limits at all times.
The Uttarakhand Adventure Car Rally will touch some of the most beautiful
tourist hotspots of the state. It will begin from Dehradun on February 2
and move via Dev Prayag, Karan Prayag, Rudra Prayag and Nand Prayag to the
ski resort at Auli. With newly-laid out, smooth roads, the picturesque
drive leads to the celebrated snow-tops, a delight for skiers and
sight-seeing. On the way is Shivpuri, which draws huge domestic and foreign
tourism for white water rafting.
On Day Two, the rally will come down from Auli to Ramnagar, which flanks
the Jim Corbett National Wildlife Park, again a tourist hotspot. The rally
will end at Dehradun on Day Three.
Mr Uma Kant Panwar said that the rally marks the resurgence of tourism in
the state. “Uttarakhand has world-class holiday destinations for families
and youth alike. The roads are good again, and we invite all tourists to
enjoy the unique holiday experience here,” he said. Uttarakhand Adventure
Car Rally adds to the state’s adventure tourism calendar, along with
skiing, mountaineering, white water rafting and mesmerizing encounters in
the wildlife parks.
The rally is being organized by Himalayan Motorsport. This is the premier
Shimla-based motorsport club which organizes the Raid De Himalaya, one of
the top-ten toughest rallies of the world. Uttarakhand Adventure Car Rally
is being supported by Maruti Suzuki and JK Tyres.
Mr Vijay Parmar, the president of Himalayan Motorsport, said that after the
internationally popular Himalayan Rally, motorsport has been re-started in
Uttarakhand on a small scale. “Motorsport has great potential to grow in
Uttarakhand, and will showcase its excellent tourism destinations
nationally and internationally. The state has a super network of roads, and
more roads are being constructed in highly picturesque locales,” he said.
The Himalayan Rally, which used to go through Uttarakhand, was last
organized almost 25 years ago.

Some 299 million tons of plastics were produced in 2013, representing a 4 percent increase over 2012. Recovery and recycling, however, remain insufficient, and millions of tons of plastics end up in landfills and oceans each year, writes Gaelle Gourmelon, Communications and Marketing Manager at the Worldwatch Institute, in the Institute’s latest Vital Signs Online article (www.worldwatch.org). Worldwide plastic production has been growing as the durable, primarily petroleum-based material gradually replaces materials like glass and metal. Today, an average person living in Western Europe or North America consumes 100 kilograms of plastic each year, mostly in the form of packaging. Asia uses just 20 kilograms per person, but this figure is expected to grow rapidly as the region’s economies expand. According to the United Nations Environmental Programme, an estimated 22-43 percent of the plastic used worldwide is disposed of in landfills, where its resources are wasted, the material takes up valuable space, and it blights communities. Recovering plastic from the waste stream for recycling or for combustion for energy generation has the potential to minimize these problems. However, much of the plastic collected for recycling in Europe, the United States, Japan, and other industrialized countries is shipped to countries with lower recycling standards. And burning plastic for energy requires air emissions controls and produces hazardous ash, all while being relatively inefficient. Most plastic scraps from countries that have established collection systems for the material flow to China, which receives 56 percent (by weight) of waste plastic imports worldwide. Indirect evidence suggests that most of this imported plastic is reprocessed at low-tech, family-run facilities with no environmental protection controls, such as proper disposal of contaminants or waste water. There are also concerns that low-quality plastics are not reused but are disposed of or incinerated for energy in plants that lack air pollution control systems. Through its 2010 Green Fence Operation, the Chinese government has started to work to reduce the number of unregulated facilities. Approximately 10-20 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans each year. A recent study conservatively estimated that 5.25 trillion plastic particles weighing a total of 268,940 tons are currently floating in the world’s oceans. This debris results in an estimated $13 billion a year in losses from damage to marine ecosystems, including financial losses to fisheries and tourism as well as time spent cleaning beaches. Animals such as seabirds, whales, and dolphins can become entangled in plastic matter, and floating plastic items-such as discarded nets, docks, and boats-can transport microbes, algae, invertebrates, and fish into non-native regions, affecting local ecosystems. The environmental and social benefits of plastics must be weighed against the problems that the durability and high volume of this material present to the waste stream. Plastics help to reduce food waste by keeping products fresh longer, allow for the manufacture of life-saving healthcare equipment, reduce packaging mass compared with other materials, improve transportation efficiency, and have large potential for use in renewable energy technologies. But plastic litter, gyres of plastics in the oceans, and toxic additives in plastic products-including colorants, flame retardants, and plasticizers (such as bisphenol A, or BPA)-are raising awareness of and strengthening consumer demand for more sustainable materials. Along with reducing unnecessary plastic consumption, finding more environmentally friendly packaging alternatives, and improving product and packaging design to use less plastic, many challenges associated with plastics could be addressed by improving management of the material across its life cycle. Businesses and consumers could increase their participation in collection in order to move plastic waste toward a recovery supply chain, and companies could switch to greater use of recycled plastics. Governments must regulate the plastic supply chain to encourage and monitor recycling. Report highlights: About 4 percent of the petroleum consumed worldwide each year is used to make plastic, and another 4 percent is used to power plastic manufacturing processes. In Europe, 26 percent, or 6.6 million tons, of the post-consumer plastic produced in 2012 was recycled, while 36 percent was incinerated for energy generation. The remaining 38 percent of post-consumer plastics in Europe went to landfills. In the United States, only 9 percent of post-consumer plastic (2.8 million tons) was recycled in 2012. The remaining 32 million tons was discarded.

Balanced Bucks beat Heat for 3rd time this season, 109-102

MIAMI: Jason Kidd’s wins against Miami keep piling up.
So do the Heat injuries, with Dwyane Wade now hurting again.

Brandon Knight had 17 points and six assists and the Milwaukee Bucks put seven players in double figures on the way to beating the Heat 109-102 on Tuesday night.

Khris Middleton also scored 17 for the Bucks, who got 15 from Jerryd Bayless, 14 from O.J. Mayo, 13 from Giannis Antetokounmpo, 12 from John Henson and 11 from Chris Dudley. And Kidd moved to 7-0 in regular-season games as a coach against Miami.

With fighters Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao watching courtside, Milwaukee beat Miami for the third time in as many meetings this season, moving three games clear of the Heat in the race for No. 6 in the Eastern Conference. The Bucks’ bench outscored Miami’s 44-13.

Chris Bosh had 26 points for Miami, Mario Chalmers added 21 points and eight assists and Hassan Whiteside had 16 points and 16 rebounds. Miami became the first Milwaukee opponent in 18 games to shoot better than 50 percent, and it still didn’t matter.

The Heat lost Wade in the third quarter with a strained right hamstring. Wade – who finished with 12 points in 18 minutes – has also dealt with left hamstring trouble on two other occasions this season.
Wade leaving was the latest development in the season-long saga of Heat injury news came after Miami made the pregame decision to keep Luol Deng (left calf soreness) and Chris Andersen (elbow and back soreness) out of the starting lineup, with Danny Granger and Whiteside taking their places.
Granger scored 14 for Miami.

Milwaukee led by 10 points in the second quarter, but the Heat – who have struggled in third quarters all season – roared out of halftime and went up 78-68 with 3:54 left in the period on a 3-pointer by Norris Cole, the capper of a 13 1/2-minute stretch in which Miami outscored the Bucks 43-23.

Rose’s shot lifts Bulls over Warriors 113-111 in overtime

OAKLAND: One after another, teams trotted into rowdy Oracle Arena the past two months confident they could cool off the NBA’s hottest team on their home floor.
It took 113 points, 53 minutes and one big shot from a former MVP to finally make it happen.
Derrick Rose hit a step-back jumper with 7 seconds remaining in overtime, and the Chicago Bulls ended Golden State’s franchise-record 19-game home winning streak with a thrilling 113-111 victory over the Warriors on Tuesday night.

Rose, looking as healthy as ever, dribbled to his left and created space to get off the 20-footer over Klay Thompson, skipping around the court after the Warriors called timeout. Rose finished with 30 points, and his final basket overshadowed a night when he committed a career-high 11 turnovers and made just 13 of 33 shots.

Thompson misfired a wide-open runner off the glass as time expired.
The Warriors forced overtime on Draymond Green’s tying tip-in with 1.4 seconds left and looked ready to recreate their unbeatable spark in front of a sellout crowd of 19,596. But they couldn’t do enough to slow down a rejuvenated Rose, and Chicago’s frontcourt overwhelmed the Warriors inside with center Andrew Bogut a last-minute scratch with flu-like symptoms.
Gasol had 18 points and 16 rebounds, and Joakim Noah had 18 points and 15 rebounds as the Bulls pounded the Warriors down low. They outrebounded Golden State 61 to 48.

Thompson had 30 points and 10 rebounds, and David Lee scored a season-high 24 points for the NBA-leading Warriors (36-7), who lost on their home floor for the only the second time all season and the first time since San Antonio knocked them off on Nov. 11.

Indeed, Tom Thibodeau’s team clamped down after the Warriors started 9 for 20 from 3-point range. Golden State missed all 13 attempts from beyond the arc after the first half.
Stephen Curry still put the Warriors in position to win, capping a 7-0 spurt to start the fourth quarter with one of his biggest highlights: faking a behind-the-back pass with his left hand and throwing a no-look toss over his right shoulder to Lee for a dunk that put the Warriors up 88-79.

But just as he did throughout the night, Rose brought the Bulls back – inspiring a louder-than-usual visiting crowd sprinkled around the arena to a light roar each time.

Chicago capped its closing burst by trapping Curry in the backcourt and forcing him into an errant pass. Rose came up with the ball and fed Kirk Hinrich, whose 3-pointer put the Bulls up 107-105 with 15.8 seconds remaining.
Andre Iguodala missed a 3 after a timeout, but Green pushed Noah aside for the tying tip-in. Rose’s long-range heave at the end of regulation was never close.

Neither team could create much separation in the extra session.

Green stole Hinrich’s inbounds pass in the final minute before Thompson missed a 3-pointer on the other end. Rose dribbled out the shot clock, then hit the jumper over Thompson to put the Bulls up for good.

After a timeout, Nikola Mirotic fouled Iguodala behind the basket as he jumped. Officials ruled Iguodala was not in the act of shooting, giving Golden State the ball on the side, while Kerr called on them to award Iguodala two free throws.

Thompson still managed to break free on the inbounds pass, but he missed the running bank shot to finish off Golden State’s loss.

Irving, James lead Cavs to 7th straight, 103-95 over Pistons

AUBURN HILLS: LeBron James came leaping in to try to stop Jodie Meeks as the Detroit guard drove to the basket during the final seconds of the third quarter.

After colliding with Meeks, James put his hands out to break his fall before sliding across the floor on his stomach.

James barely missed any game time after that anxious moment, and he finished with 32 points to help the Cleveland Cavaliers to their seventh straight victory Tuesday night, 103-95 over the Pistons. Kyrie Irving matched his season high with 38 points.

The Cavs never trailed in the second half, but when James hit the deck and didn’t immediately get up, that was plenty to be concerned about.

James quickly came back in the game, and his two-handed breakaway dunk early in the fourth put Cleveland up 80-68.

Greg Monroe had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Pistons, who pulled within eight and had the ball late in the fourth quarter, but Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was unable to connect from 3-point range. James drew a foul at the other end and made both free throws to make it 88-78 with 2:56 to play.

Caldwell-Pope was fouled by James while shooting a 3-pointer with 2:00 remaining, and that trio of free throws made it 90-83. The Pistons got the ball back, but Andre Drummond missed a layup, and Irving connected from beyond the arc.

The Cavs avenged a 23-point home loss to Detroit late last month. That game was part of a seven-game winning streak for the Pistons, but now Detroit is struggling to overcome the loss of Brandon Jennings, who ruptured his left Achilles tendon last weekend and will miss the rest of the season.

Detroit led 19-17 after a first quarter in which the teams combined to shoot 1 for 16 from outside the paint. Cleveland shrugged off that rough start and reached 100 points for the eighth straight game.

Irving was 6 of 10 from 3-point range. The rest of the Cavs went 3 of 24.

New Delhi, January 28, 2015: At a time when the world is getting increasingly divided and fragmented, National School of Drama, one of the foremost theatre training institutions in the world, is attempting to send out a strong message of bringing people together with its flagship theatre festival, Bharat Rang Mahotsav. The 17^th edition of the festival has been conceptualized and designed with the theme of ‘Breaking Borders’, and would be held in New Delhi from 1^stFebruary to 18^th February 2015.
This year, Bharat Rang Mahotsav, promises to be bigger and better than ever with over 12 countries including the likes of USA, UK, Germany, China, France, Poland, Switzerland, Norway, Israel, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, among others, taking part and showcasing around 150 plays to theatre lovers in the city. The festival will also travel to other parts of the country with plays being showcased in Agartala (Tripura), Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh), Aurangabad (Maharashtra) and Panaji (Goa).
To popularize theatre among the youth and to use theatre as a learning process, National School of Drama is facilitating various colleges to perform in this year’s Bharat Rang Mahotsav. Various theatre troupes and rock bands of Delhi University colleges and Jawaharlal Nehru University will find an opportunity to showcase their talent. The idea behind the initiative is to connect the young generation with theatre, which will create an environment for better theatre productions. Several ambience performances comprising of folk performance, children’s theatre are being scheduled for non-stop entertainment during the 18 days festival.
NSD Repertory Company’s “Ghazab Teri Adaa” directed by Prof. Waman Kendre will be the inaugural performance of the festival on 1^st February at Kamani auditorium at 6.00pm. NSD Repertory Company has been conferred with this honour as it is celebrating its 50^th year.
Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State of Culture and Tourism (Independent Charge) & Civil Aviation, Govt. of India and eminent stage and film personality Om Puri have consented to be the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour at the inaugural ceremony.
The 17^th Bharat Rang Mahotsav will be a complete package of cultural extravaganza with seminars, literary interactions (interface with Krishna Sobti), lecture demonstrations(Himani Shivpuri’s acting in a scene from Krishna Sobti’s Mitro Marjani), dance (dance of Birju Maharaj), company theatre music (B Jayshree’s talk on “Rang Sangeet”), film music, visual art (Raghu Rai’s photography), exhibitions etc.
For the first time, NSD is venturing to set up a Theatre Bazar for the theatre lovers, enthusiasts and audience in general. In the Theatre Bazar products related to theatre will be showcased.
In another global initiative, National School of Drama, for the first time, will also organize “World Theatre Forum” on the theme of– Breaking the Borders, where in theatre luminaries from all over the world and across the country will come together to interact with the audience. Various discussions and seminars will take place around the theme “Paridhi Ke Bahar-Natak Bazar”, to bring marginalized voices to the national platform. “Meet the Directors” will facilitate audience to interact with directors from the previous day’s performances, everyday in the morning starting from February 3rd   at 10am at Antarmukh.
The 17^th Bharat Rang Mahotsav will pay tribute to Shambhu Mitra (1915-1997) and Begum Akhtar (1914-1974) for their birth centenary, and Veenapani Chawla (1947-2014) who passed away recently.
This will include performance, exhibition and lecture on Shambhu Mitra, Jamal-e-Begum Akhtar, enacted by Prof. Vidushi Rita Ganguly, The Tenth Head directed by Veenapani Chawla and presented by Adishakti Laboratory for Theatre Art Research, Pondicherry.
The closing ceremony will be on February 18^th where Aadirangam – an ensemble of 8 tribal group performers from all over India will be presented by National School of Drama, coordinated by Dr. Laique Hussain.
The entire NSD campus will be transformed into a festival ground for the next 18 days where food, music, handloom & handicraft products will be available for its audience. A huge 3D replica of NSD has been created to enhance the ambience of the festival.
For the first time Lalit Kala Akademi, Sahitya Akademi, Sangeet Natak Akademi and other government cultural bodies have come forward to be associated with the festival. This year the theatre lovers will be able to book tickets online on the National School of Drama’s website from 29^th January, 2015 onwards.
Prof. Waman Kendre, Director, National School of Drama said, “Theatre can’t grow in isolation. This year we are bringing the world theatre to one stage, where 12 other nations will showcase their theatre and witness India’s varied theatre forms be it folk, tribal or modern from almost all the states. We are emphasizing on youth participation in the festival as they are the torch bearers of theatre in the future.”

National School of Drama
The National School of Drama is one of the foremost theatre training institutions in the world and the only one of its kind in India. It was set up by the Sangeet Natak Akademi as one of its constituent units in 1959. In 1975, it became an independent entity and was registered as an autonomous organization under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, fully financed by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Training in the School is highly intensive and is based on a thorough, comprehensive, carefully planned syllabus which covers every aspect of theatre and in which theory is related to practice. As a part of their training, students are required to produce plays which are then performed before the public.

The Bharat Rang Mahotsav was started in 1999 by the NSD in order to contribute to the growth and development of theatre across the country. From being a national festival that presented the work of some of the most creative theatre workers in India, it has grown into an international event, hosting theatre companies from around the world, and is today acknowledged as the largest theatre festival of Asia dedicated solely to theatre. etc.
Every time Dr. Manmohan Singh flew out to any G-20 nation he carried
with him ‘50% of Debt Burden of India in Corporate India – $500b’ –
Modi too didn’t abandon the tradition. They invested $500b in foreign
Countries. Have not Created any IPR, Very Few Jobs, Made Little Tax
Contribution and Pay Nothing as Dividend.
India’s biggest DEBTOR who owes people of India $40 billion is first
in the queue as well and the rest in the Queue makes up 50% of the
debt owned by Indian Companies on Board Modi Flight. [Narayan Murthy
is the only one free of debt.]
